The Atlanta Braves are opening up a very anticipated three-game weekend series with the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday night. Both the Braves and Dodgers are atop their respective divisions, and this series could very well be looked at as an NLCS preview.

Earlier this week, when the Braves activated Raisel Iglesias from the injured list, Atlanta designated Carlos Carrasco for assignment. On Friday, per reports by Grant McAuley, the Braves are re-signing 17-year MLB veteran Carlos ‘Cookie’ Carrasco to a minor league deal. This wave of transactions involving Carrasco has occurred a couple of times this season, but it’s clear that the Braves value him enough in their organization to keep bringing him back. He will head to Triple-A for now, but is likely in line to be one of the first arms recalled if another Braves player goes down with injury.

Braves Re-Sign Carlos Carrasco

Carlos Carrasco has been in the Atlanta Braves organization for the last two years. This season, he’s pitched just 2.1 innings at the MLB level, but he did not give up a run in that small sample, which could give Atlanta some added buffer in terms of how they utilize the pitching staff.

He’s likely just a long relief option in low-leverage spots, as Carlos Carrasco is now 39-years-old, and doesn’t have the stuff he used to anymore.

As for what this move means for the Braves, there’s not much substance to it, as most analysts and insiders were confident that Atlanta would bring back Carrasco on this minor league deal to help with organizational pitching depth.

Carrasco pitched 13.2 innings for the Braves last season, but posted an ugly 9.88 ERA. Despite that, Atlanta is giving him endless chances to stick around with an MLB organization.

Carlos Carrasco’s MLB Career

Carrasco is a 17-year MLB veteran pitcher. Before being diagnosed with cancer, he spent most of his career with the Cleveland Guardians.

His career pitching record is 112-105 with an ERA of 4.22 over 268 total starts.

He spent 12 seasons with the Guardians before joining the New York Mets for a few seasons then going back to the Guardians. Carrasco has also pitched for the New York Yankees.

Atlanta Braves Right Now…

The Atlanta Braves are opening up a weekend series with the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday night.

Before the Dodgers series, Atlanta lost its first series of the year against the Seattle Mariners.

The Braves’ record is still 26-12, and they sit comfortably atop the National League East.
