Clayton Tune has several ties to the Houston Texans.

The Houston Texans are building up their group ahead of their rookie minicamp this coming weekend, and Clayton Tune could be part of it.

Tune is a quarterback. That is a position at which the Texans are currently three-deep, including former Offensive Rookie of the Year and Pro Bowler C.J. Stroud and fellow former Houston draft picks Davis Mills and Graham Mertz.

However, none of them is available for what the Texans are bringing Tune in to do.

The Houston Chronicle’s Jonathan M. Alexander expects multiple QBs to be brought in for the Texans’ rookie minicamp, including Tune.

Tune, for one, has several noteworthy ties to the Texans.

“Yes, I expect the Texans to have a couple of tryout quarterbacks,” Alexander wrote in an article on May 6. “One of those is Clayton Tune, the former UH quarterback (2018-22) who threw passes to wide receiver Tank Dell, one source with knowledge of the player participating said.”

“Tune was drafted by the Cardinals in the fifth round in 2023. He spent two seasons in Arizona and one season in Green Bay.”

The 27-year-old QB has appeared in 15 games with two career starts. He is 0-2 in those games.

Tune started for the Packers in the 2025 regular-season finale. He threw for 34 yards on 11 attempts in that contest. He was the only Green Bay QB to throw a pass. Tune has completed 55.3% of his passes for 112 scoreless yards with 3 interceptions.

Texans QBs Ineligible for Rookie Minicamp

Unlike last offseason, when his pectoral strain dominated the chatter around him, Stroud is healthy and working hard in preparation for the upcoming season, just as Mills and Mertz most likely are.

However, they are not allowed to participate in rookie minicamp, per league rules.

That is what has led to the Texans’ interest in Tune, and they could opt for another veteran passer as well.

Per Article 22, Section (b) of the NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement, “During a Club’s post-Draft Rookie Minicamp, veteran players (as defined in Article 23, Section 1) who are not under contract to any Club may participate on a tryout basis.”

Teams are permitted up to five veterans, and they must submit lists to the NFL beforehand.

Texans Long Snapper, Kicker to Rookie Minicamp Invite List

In addition to Tune and their 12-man undrafted free agent haul, the Texans have invited a pair of special teamers to their rookie minicamp.

#Texans invited @AggieFootball long snapper and Memorial High graduate Jacob Graham to their rookie minicamp,” KPRC 2’s Aaron Wilson reported in a post on X on May 6.  “They also invited Connecticut kicker Chris Freeman.”

Graham also played fullback in college.

The Texans notably have kicker Ka’imi Fairbairn and long snapper Austin Brinkman. Like Stroud and the QBs, though, Brinkman and Fairbairn are not eligible to participate in rookie minicamp.

The Texans also navigated an injury to Fairbairn last season. So, getting information on potential replacement options–they turned to Matthew Wright last season–is a matter of due diligence. Brinkman, meanwhile, is entering just his second season.
