The Boston Red Sox have some good young pitchers coming up through their system. Two of the top arms are left-handers Payton Tolle and Connelly Early. There were some trade rumors over the winter with both players mentioned at times, and for good reason.

Early dazzled late in the regular season in 2025 and was so good that former manager Alex Cora gave him a postseason start. He started Game 3 of the American League wild-card series in the Bronx against the New York Yankees. Early was outdueled by the Yankees’ young starter Cam Schlitter.

As for Tolle, he began the season in Triple-A with the Worcester Red Sox, Boston’s top minor league affiliate. However, injuries have doomed the Boston starting rotation, and he got the call earlier this year. He has taken the opportunity and run with it.

Boston Red Sox Prospect Payton Tolle Earns First MLB Win

Entering their three-game series against the Detroit Tigers in the Motor City, Tolle got the ball and picked up his first MLB win in a rather dominant fashion. Originally slated to go up against Tigers ace Tarik Skubal, who was scratched and will need surgery, Tolle dominated in a 5-4 Red Sox victory.

The No. 1 Boston prospect and 14th-ranked MLB Pipeline prospect went seven innings, allowing two runs on just one hit and eight strikeouts. He walked one and needed just 83 pitches to get 21 outs. Detroit scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth without the benefit of a hit. A hit-by-pitch, a walk, a throwing error, and a fielder’s choice gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead.

After his teammates put up five runs in the seventh, the bullpen closed the door over the final two innings for Tolle’s first career MLB win.

“It took long enough [to get the win]. I’m excited about it,” Tolle said. “I was really looking forward to this. I’m kind of proud of it right now. It was a good day.”

It did take too long for him to pick up his first MLB win. Tolle didn’t beat around the bush with that quote. He had a chance two weeks ago against the Yankees at Fenway. However, the offense let him down in a game he pitched well enough to win. That wasn’t going to be the case on Monday night.

Boston Red Sox Have Young Duo With Payton Tolle and Connelly Early

After falling behind, the Red Sox put up five seventh-inning runs, highlighted by a three-run Jarren Duran home run. However, Garrett Whitlock allowed two runs in the eighth, but Alordis Chapman shut the door in the bottom of the ninth.

Make no mistake about it, Boston has two up-and-coming arms in Tolle and Early. Both are cementing their spots in the rotation for now before they get Garrett Crochet and Sonny Gray back. However, Tolle and Early are creating some tough roster decisions, given how much Brayan Bello has struggled. Furthermore, Ranger Suárez exited his start on Sunday, and his status for his next start remains questionable.

Getting your first MLB win is the toughest to get as a pitcher. Just ask Tolle. However, that is under his belt, and now he’s making the case to remain in the rotation as long as interim manager Chad Tracy needs him.
