The Mets have reassigned veteran pitcher Carl Edwards Jr. to Triple-A

The New York Mets have endured a nightmarish start to the 2026 campaign, and there doesn’t seem to be any end in sight. Despite laboring to a 12-22 start, the Mets have refused to make any major changes yet, with manager Carlos Mendoza holding onto his job to this point. And yet, the losses continue to pile up at an alarming rate.

While Mendoza gets a shot to figure things out with this team, the roster is continually being tinkered with in an effort to find the right mix of players who can lead a turnaround. Recently, the team decided veteran relief pitcher Carl Edwards Jr. wasn’t a part of their plans, but it appears as if he will be sticking with the organization after all.

Edwards initially found his way to the majors with the Chicago Cubs in 2015, and he gradually turned himself into a key piece of their bullpen. After helping the team win a World Series in 2016, Edwards turned in the best year of his career in 2017 when he posted a 2.98 ERA to go along with 94 strikeouts in 66.1 innings of work.

Since leaving the Cubs midway through the 2019 season, Edwards has struggled to find his footing, as he’s spent time with eight different teams. Edwards enjoyed a resurgent season in 2022 while with the Washington Nationals (6-3, 2.76 ERA, 2 SV, 56 K, 1.23 WHIP), but besides that, he’s generally been unable to reach the heights he hit earlier in his career while with Chicago.

Edwards appeared in two games during his brief stint in the majors with New York to begin the year, posting a 1.50 ERA in six innings of work while also racking up 11 strikeouts. Despite turning in a pair of strong performances, the team still opted to waive Edwards last week. However, he cleared waivers, meaning that for the time being, he has been reassigned to Triple-A.

“The Mets outrighted Carl Edwards to Triple-A Syracuse on Sunday,” CBS Sports reported. “Edwards cleared waivers after being removed from the 40-man roster. He has the ability to elect free agency, though it’s unclear whether he plans to exercise that right or remain in the organization.”

Carl Edwards Jr. Could Force His Way Off the Mets

On the surface, this is a big win for the Mets, as they have managed to keep a key piece of pitching depth in their organization. However, Edwards could elect to hit free agency and try to latch on with another team in the majors, but considering how he went unclaimed on waivers, he could be inclined to stick around with New York and see if another opportunity opens up with the team in the majors in the future.

It was a brief stint in the majors, but Edwards performed well during his time with the Mets, so it’s not out of the picture to suggest that he could find his way back to the majors in the near future. In the meantime, New York will look to pick up another win on Monday night when it kicks off a three-game series against the Colorado Rockies.
