In LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, you can learn new skills via the skill tree and upgrade your gadgets via Workbenches. While skills are shared among all playable characters, gadget upgrades are not.
As such, if you are not planning on exploring Gotham City thoroughly for Waynetech chips, you will want to use the ones you get naturally as you progress through the game wisely to unlock crucial upgrades that will make combat easier and generally more fun.

During the course of the adventure, multiple characters will join Batman as he fights crime in Gotham City. While the main story missions dictate your companion, Batman will always be present. As such, you will want to spend Waynetech chips on Batman's upgrades first, as he will always be one of the two active characters.
Unlike the skill tree, which progressively unlocks as you complete story missions, upgrades are all available as soon as you unlock the Workbench, and new characters join you. As such, you can unlock any upgrade you want if you have enough Waynetech chips. This allows you to unlock crucial upgrades very quickly.

Focus Bat Swarm is the final Batarang upgrade, and the one you should unlock first. This ability allows Batman to summon a swarm of bats to damage and distract nearby enemies by pressing the R1 / RB / R button while aiming. Although this ability uses Focus, it can be used to build Focus back very quickly.
To use this strategy effectively:

Once you unlock Focus Bat Swarm, you should unlock Batarang Combo, Carbon Fiber Tips, and Scatterang to make the above strategy even more effective.
With these upgrades, you will be able to take advantage of the Bat Swarm in a more effective way, stunning multiple enemies more quickly to unleash a flurry of attacks without having to pay attention to gunfire or keep an eye on potential attacks to counter.
