Last week, Bungie dropped a bomb on the video game industry with the announcement that its nearly-decade spanning shooter, Destiny 2, is no longer in active development and would not receive any more major updates past June 9, 2026. To call it the end of an era is an understatement, but fans are already making their voice clear on what they want the studio to do next, as a petition for Destiny 3 has already garnered 180K signatures, which just so happens to be more than double the number of Marathon's peak concurrent player count on Steam.
The petition began three days prior to the time of this writing, shortly after the news that Bungie would be sunsetting Destiny 2 after almost nine years. It also follows reports that Destiny 3, to the chagrin of 180K+ players, is not in active development, and that Bungie employees currently have significant layoffs to look forward to, rather than a new project to jump on. Though, a report from Forbes points out that at least some developers have already been moved to Marathon, which will be the studio's only active game for the foreseeable future.
That report also adds more claims that further show just how much the studio's future hangs in the balance. With the decision to stop developing new content for Destiny 2, it's obvious that everything now rides on Marathon, a game that reportedly pulled in 2.2 million players in March across PC and consoles, though its exact sales are unclear.
According to Forbes, some members of Bungie have known that Destiny 2's days were numbered for some time now, as the decision to shutter active development on it was made "earlier this year," and that only those who needed to be moved onto developing its final June update were told. Those working on it also reportedly "'begged' leadership to tell more people," claiming that a divide between those who knew what was coming and those who didn't was growing internally.
It also adds that several Bungie employees did not know what was happening until the public announcement was made this past Thursday, and that while its clear the coming layoffs will be "significant," they are not necessarily "immediately imminent," with Bungie's leadership reportedly "dodging" questions about how deep the cuts would go, and when they'll be taking place.
As to why Destiny 3 wasn't automatically greenlit by PlayStation, the answer is fairly obvious even without an official statement on the matter. As you may have been able to speculate yourself, and as the aforementioned report claims, PlayStation is cautious of green-lighting what would be an incredibly expensive project, and as we've heard from previous reports, Bungie will begin to pitch new projects to PlayStation, some of which could, of course, be new Destiny projects, in the near future.
All this to say that while Bungie's future very much hangs in the balance, fans have made their voices on what Bungie should do next crystal clear. It's worth noting that in the time it took to write this article, nearly two thousand more signatures were added to the petition.
