BAE Systems has been awarded a $535 million contract by the U.S. Army for the continued production of M109A7 Paladin Self-Propelled Howitzers and M992A3 Ammunition Carriers. The award underscores the Army’s commitment to maintaining and modernizing its artillery capabilities while ensuring sustained support for Armored Brigade Combat Teams.

The M109A7 Paladin represents the latest evolution of the Army’s long-serving self-propelled artillery platform. Designed to deliver enhanced firepower, mobility, and survivability, the system provides artillery units with the ability to rapidly deploy and engage targets in dynamic battlefield environments. Its advanced “shoot-and-scoot” capability allows crews to fire and quickly reposition, reducing vulnerability to enemy counterfire while maintaining operational effectiveness.

Battle-proven platform

“The M109A7 Paladin is a battle-proven platform that delivers what Soldiers need to succeed on today’s battlefield,” said Dan Furber, Combat Mission Systems vice president of Artillery programs.

“With its reliable performance and robust industrial base, the Paladin ensures our troops have the firepower and support they can count on when it matters most.”

As a critical component of the Army’s armored formations, the M109A7 combines precision fire support with improved maneuverability. The platform is engineered to operate effectively across a wide range of terrains and combat conditions, offering commanders a reliable and responsive indirect-fire capability.

Paladin can deliver accurate fires in less than 30 seconds

According to BAE Systems, the Paladin can deliver accurate fires in less than 30 seconds after emplacement and within approximately one minute while moving. Such rapid response times are increasingly important in modern conflicts where artillery survivability depends on speed, mobility, and precision.

The contract also reflects the importance of maintaining a strong defense industrial base. BAE Systems has continued investing in artillery modernization, manufacturing capacity expansion, and production efficiency improvements. These investments are intended to ensure the long-term sustainability of the Paladin program while supporting the Army’s evolving operational requirements.

Company officials emphasized that the M109A7 remains a battle-proven platform trusted by soldiers in demanding operational environments. Continued production will help ensure that frontline forces retain access to dependable fire support systems capable of meeting current and future battlefield challenges.

Artillery modernization

The award highlights the ongoing priority placed on artillery modernization as militaries around the world seek to enhance long-range precision fire capabilities. By continuing production of the M109A7 and its associated ammunition carriers, the U.S. Army aims to strengthen its readiness and maintain a decisive artillery advantage.
