























Russian forces have rehearsed their “Bastion” Arctic sea-denial strike from a remote Arctic outpost, Franz Josef Land, according to reports. The exercise simulated a 186-mile (300-km) engagement of a naval group using relocatable missile launchers.
According to reports, the exercise is part of Moscow’s effort to extend its anti-ship deterrent to key Arctic locations. The island itself is part of a remote group of islands far north of Russia, sitting between the Barents Sea and the Arctic Ocean.
Russia currently uses it as a forward military outpost and a launch point for missiles. It also acts as a key sensor hub, watching ships and aircraft. Position-wise, it’s ideal for blocking access into Russia’s northern waters.
The exercise was conducted using Russian K-300P “Bastion” launchers firing P-800 “Oniks” missiles. In simple terms, this system comprises a truck-mounted missile launcher that can move, hide, and fire quickly.
Specifically designed to hunt and kill ships, the missile system has a theoretical maximum range of 186 miles (300 km). Described as “hypersonic” by Moscow, the “Oniks” missiles are most likely very fast supersonic (sub-hypersonic), but they are still very potent weapons.
The exercise itself was run to simulate a naval group approaching the region and have the “Bastion” launchers move from cover, engage the enemy, and then “hide” again.
While NATO wasn’t specifically named during the exercise brief, analysts believe the scenario is part of Russia’s preparation for potential NATO incursions into the area.
To this end, the drill was a rehearsal of Moscow’s planned anti-access, area-denial posturing in the Arctic. The core idea is that instead of trying to control the ocean everywhere, Russia can make critical “choke points” too dangerous for NATO ships to enter.
For Russia, this also ties in nicely to protecting its precious nuclear submarine fleet. Based in bases near the Kola Peninsula, these submarines are the core of Russia’s nuclear deterrent.
By deterring NATO incursions into the region, Russia’s submarines can have something of a “safe zone” to operate in undisturbed. To this end, the “Bastion” system forms a protective bubble using missiles, radar, and other air defenses.
For NATO, this presents a bit of a problem, as should conflict with Russia ever erupt, they would need to move forces in and around the region to defend Northern Europe. With the areas now contested, this directly restricts freedom of movement, preventing frictionless NATO naval force movements.
Another interesting wrinkle is Russia’s apparent lesson learning from the Ukraine War here, too. According to reports, the recent exercise included apparent adaptations like the use of drones for spotting and surveillance.
Moscow has also clearly learned that it must keep its missile units mobile and limit exposure to prevent detection and destruction. To this end, “Bastion” units now come with better camouflage and sophisticated counter-drone tactics.
With this exercise, Russia is signaling to NATO that it can shut down parts of the Arctic to ships using mobile missile systems whenever it wants. For NATO, the takeaway needs to be that it needs better surveillance, missile defense, and faster response in the Arctic.
