US firm’s advanced battleship management system to bolste...

A Florida-based company is set to bolster the Polish Navy’s operational capabilities and maritime defence with an advanced ship management system.

L3Harris Technologies’ system will enhance the war capabilities of the new Miecznik-class frigates.

PGZ Stocznia Wojenna, the state-owned shipyard, selected L3Harris’ Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS) to boost ship performance, reliability and safety.

“Miecznik-class frigates, powered by L3Harris’ IPMS, represent the future of maritime defense, providing Poland with superior combat power and a strategic edge in regional waters,” said Nino DiCosmo, president, Maritime, Space & Mission Systems, L3Harris.

“Our next-generation solution strengthens Poland’s defense industrial capabilities while enabling the fleet to extend operational range and endurance.”

IPMS provides integrated monitoring and control of ship propulsion

L3Harris claimed that it enhanced the IPMS technology and delivered it to nearly 300 vessels in 28 navies around the world.

The company also highlighted that the warships have comprehensive platform automation capabilities that allow them to achieve unprecedented levels of ship survivability and operational effectiveness. Integrating these capabilities at the platform level can optimize operational effectiveness and contribute to crewing reductions. L3Harris claimed that its Integrated Platform Management Systems (IPMS) provides integrated monitoring and control of ship propulsion, electrical functions, auxiliaries and damage control machinery and systems.

L3Harris also revealed that the IPMS is a distributed architecture real-time digital control system. This open architecture system is comprised of multifunction control consoles and Remote Terminal Units (RTU).

The company also pointed out that RTUs are based on COTS open architecture electronic modules that integrate both signal conditioning and processing functions and provide optical isolation for field signals. The RTUs acquire plant sensor data, perform plausibility tests, check for limit violation, transmit the data to other IPMS subsystems as required, process automatic control sequences, output control signals to actuators, and perform online and offline built-in tests, according to L3Harris.

The automatic propulsion control and power management software resides in the RTUs together with control software for other platform machinery and systems. These units are ruggedized for installation in warship machinery spaces and can withstand the most stringent environmental conditions.

System can boost operational efficiency

RTUs are used for process level data acquisition and control. The consoles provide the Human Machine Interfaces (HMI) for the operators at various shipboard locations, according to the company.

The company’s IPMS incorporates functionalities and capabilities derived from years of working with partners such as the U.K. Royal Navy, Royal Netherlands Navy, Royal Australian Navy and the Royal Canadian Navy.

The Miecznik frigates, based on the Arrowhead 140 ship design by Babcock International, will modernize the Polish Navy and enhance its operational capabilities. L3Harris’ IPMS will optimize situational awareness, operational efficiency and safety for these next-generation warships, according to a press release.
