


























China’s reported PL-16 air-to-air missile has added a new layer to the long-range air combat race between Beijing and Washington.
The missile has not been officially confirmed by China, but reports based on leaked material, defense discussions, and seminar slides suggest it could be Beijing’s answer to the US AIM-260 Joint Advanced Tactical Missile.
Both weapons are being discussed as beyond-visual-range missiles, built to strike targets before pilots can visually see them.
That makes the comparison important in a possible Asia-Pacific conflict, where range, missile loadout, and the ability to threaten support aircraft could shape the air battle.
With limited confirmed details on both missiles, the real test may not be which one flies farther, but which one stays effective in the final moments before impact.
The main reason the PL-16 is getting attention is range.
The missile is believed to have a total flight distance of around 124 to 186 miles (200 to 300 kilometers). That puts it close to, and possibly above, the AIM-260, which is expected to travel at least 124 miles (200 kilometers).
But range alone does not decide the winner in long-range air combat. At those distances, the missile also needs to remain fast, maneuverable, and accurate in the final stage of flight.
That is where the PL-16’s reported dual-pulse or variable-thrust rocket motor matters. This technology could allow the missile to get a second burst of propulsion late in its flight. In simple terms, it may help the missile stay dangerous even after traveling a long distance.
Malcolm Davis, a senior analyst for defense strategy and national security with the Australian Strategic Policy Institute, said that at long ranges, “maneuverability in the terminal phase and guidance” are what matter most.
The PL-16 may be especially useful against large, slower aircraft.
These include airborne early warning and control aircraft, refueling tankers, reconnaissance aircraft, and bombers. These platforms are not as agile as fighter jets, but they are extremely important in modern military operations.
Tankers help fighters and bombers fly farther. Early warning aircraft help detect threats. Reconnaissance aircraft gather information. If these aircraft are pushed back, the US and its allies may find it harder to project air and naval power.
Davis said China’s strategy appears clear: take out the key combat enablers used by the US Air Force, US Navy, and allied forces.
Enrico Cau, an associate researcher at the Taiwan Strategy Research Association, said the PL-16 could be a headache for larger bombers such as the B-52 if they are within range. However, he was less certain about its effectiveness against smaller, faster, and more agile aircraft.
The AIM-260 JATM is America’s next-generation answer to China’s missile advances.
Davis said the JATM was a response to China’s earlier PL-15 missile. The PL-15 already had a reported range of around 200 kilometers, making it a major step beyond older Chinese missiles such as the PL-12 and PL-11.
The PL-16 appears to push that race further.
If the reported numbers are accurate, the PL-16 may match or exceed the AIM-260 in range. It is also believed to use advanced propulsion that could improve performance late in flight.
However, the article does not confirm full specifications for either missile. The AIM-260’s exact capabilities remain limited in public discussion, while the PL-16’s details are also based on unconfirmed material.
So, a direct winner cannot be declared.
One possible advantage for the PL-16 is size.
According to Huang Chung-ting, associate research fellow with the Institute for National Defense and Security Research in Taipei, a J-20 fighter that can carry four PL-15 missiles may be able to carry as many as six PL-16s.
That would allow a J-20 to engage more targets or remain in combat longer after its first attack. The missile may also fit inside Chinese stealth fighters such as the J-20 and the upcoming J-35.
But Huang also warned that current online material does not confirm the PL-16’s specifications, its range, propulsion system, or whether it has entered mass use.
The PL-16 may give China an edge in range, missile loadout, and attacks on large support aircraft. But the article does not prove that it beats the AIM-260. For now, it only shows that the US-China air-to-air missile race is getting more serious.
