New photos posted online show more details of China’s experimental sea-skimming aircraft, the ‘Bohai Sea Monster’. The images, which appeared on Chinese social media, reveal four external weapons pylons under its wings.

These photos give defense analysts their best look so far at the unusual prototype, which was first seen near the Bohai Sea in June 2025.

The newly visible hardpoints suggest the aircraft might be designed for combat, not just transport. Analysts have been watching the vehicle since it arrived on a pier nearly a year ago, but these new images are the first to show external mounts for weapons or military equipment.

Low-altitude craft built to evade radar

The Bohai Sea Monster is a type of wing-in-ground effect craft, also known as an ekranoplan. These vehicles travel just a few feet above the water, using compressed air between their wings and the sea surface to stay aloft.

This design allows them to move much faster than ships while staying below the radar line that would usually detect regular aircraft. Unlike airplanes, they do not fly high. Instead, they skim quickly over the waves.

The concept dates back to the 1930s, when Finnish engineer Toivo Kaario worked on ground-effect vehicles. In the 1960s, German designer Alexander Lippisch improved the concept. The Soviet Union later turned it into large military transports that could carry troops and armored vehicles across the Caspian Sea at speeds over 310 mph.

One Soviet ekranoplan was so mysterious to U.S. intelligence that it was nicknamed the “Caspian Sea Monster.” At first, reconnaissance crews had trouble figuring out what they were seeing.

New propulsion layout of Bohai Sea Monster comes into focus

When China’s craft was first spotted in 2025, naval analyst H.I. Sutton described it in Naval News as a large jet-powered ekranoplan. The latest photos show that this was not correct.

Instead, the aircraft uses four turboprop engines mounted above the wings in pairs. Each engine powers large multi-blade propellers, making the design more like a maritime patrol plane than the Soviet jet-powered ekranoplans.

The design also has a flying-boat-style hull with a stepped bottom for taking off and landing on water. Other features include a joined V-shaped tail, wingtip outrigger sponsons for balance, smaller side stabilizers, and a cockpit at the front.

The most important new detail in the photos is the underwing pylons. These hardpoints are usually found on military aircraft to carry missiles, bombs, sensor pods, or extra fuel tanks.

The pylons do not prove the aircraft is armed yet. Engineers might still be testing how it flies or trying out different equipment. Still, transport aircraft rarely need this setup, so the idea of a combat role is hard to dismiss.

Taiwan scenario shapes strategic interest

Military analysts believe the aircraft might be linked to Beijing’s plans for Taiwan and the South China Sea. Taiwan is about 112 miles from mainland China at its closest point. A fast ground-effect craft could cross that distance in less than an hour and stay hard to spot.

Such vehicles could also avoid some dangers that regular amphibious ships face, like naval mines and submarines. They might let troops, supplies, or light vehicles reach the shore quickly before defenders can react.

Analysts at Grey Dynamics also suggest the aircraft could be used to supply China’s artificial island bases in the South China Sea. Fast transport between distant outposts could help China extend its military presence in the region.

The United States is working on similar technology. Boston-based REGENT Craft is developing ground-effect “seagliders” for cargo and passenger transport. Its Squire model is made for logistics, while the larger Viceroy can carry up to 12 people at speeds close to 186 mph over water.

Despite the growing attention, many questions about the Bohai Sea Monster are still unanswered. The latest images confirm the prototype is real and being tested near water. However, they do not show how well it works, if it can fly for long periods, or what it might carry in the future.
