China’s BYD begins sales for flagship electric SUV with 5...

Chinese EV maker BYD has kicked off pre-sales for its Great Tang EV during the Beijing Auto Show, positioning the model as a key step forward in its flagship electrification strategy. The Great Tang EV is the first D-class full-size SUV under BYD’s Dynasty Network lineup and introduces the company’s second-generation Blade battery paired with a 1000V high-voltage architecture designed to support faster charging and improved efficiency.

Buyers will be able to choose between single-motor rear-wheel-drive and dual-motor all-wheel-drive variants, depending on performance needs. The dual-motor setup targets higher output and improved traction for more demanding driving conditions.

The Chinese company has confirmed that the Great Tang EV is scheduled to officially reach the market in the first half of this year, expanding its presence in the large premium electric SUV segment.

Showcasing BYD’s 10C flash charging and advanced driving dynamics

The Great Tang EV brings a maximum driving range of up to 590 miles, paired with a 0–62 mph acceleration time of just 3.9 seconds in its all-wheel-drive configuration. It also supports BYD’s latest flash charging system, which uses a 10C charging rate and up to 1000A of charging current to significantly reduce charging times, CarNewsChina reported.

Beyond performance, the SUV integrates advanced chassis technologies such as the DiSus-A dual-chamber air suspension with road preview functionality, rear-wheel steering, and a “crab walk” mode for improved maneuverability in tight spaces.

Alongside the fully electric version, BYD is also offering DM-i and DM-p hybrid variants. The DM-i model features a 300 kW electric motor paired with a 1.5-liter turbo engine producing 115 kW. The higher-performance DM-p version uses dual electric motors generating a combined 400 kW, enabling a 0–100 km/h time of 4.3 seconds.

Key technology features include a 3nm-grade cockpit chip, a premium 7.1.4-channel Devialet sound system with 27 speakers, and a “Sky Mirror” panoramic roof made from hollow laminated glass designed to enhance openness and cabin lighting.

Great Tang EV targets premium SUV segment amid rising competition

BYD’s full-size SUV family also includes the Tang and Tang L models, with the Tang EV previously reaching a sales peak of 7,103 units in June last year. However, performance has softened since the beginning of 2026, reflecting increased competition and shifting demand in the segment.

Within this context, the Great Tang is being carefully positioned in BYD’s lineup to sit above its mainstream offerings while avoiding overlap with the more premium Denza brand. The strategy places it in the upper tier of the mass-market SUV space, where it is expected to combine advanced technology, strong performance, and relatively broader accessibility.

Furthermore, it is expected that Great Tang EV will go up against rivals such as the Geely Galaxy M9, a large plug-in hybrid SUV that has already gained momentum with more than 11,000 deliveries in just the first two months of the year.
