Xiaomi shared that its YU7 GT electric performance SUV is the first car to set an automated lap record at Germany’s Nürburgring Nordschleife. During recent tests at the well-known track, the SUV completed a full lap on its own, without any human input. This achievement is an important step for Xiaomi as it starts testing its autonomous driving software in one of the toughest track settings in the world.

This test was conducted soon after the YU7 GT was launched and provides an early idea of how its autonomous systems perform in tough driving conditions. Engineers used the Nürburgring run to set a standard for future software updates and to collect data from high-speed driving.

Autonomous software faces Nürburgring challenge

The Nürburgring Nordschleife is known as one of the hardest tracks in the car industry. Its mix of fast straight sections, steep hills, and tricky corners makes it a great place to test both how a car handles and how its software performs.

In the autonomous test, the YU7 GT finished the lap in 10 minutes and 29.483 seconds, with no driver behind the wheel. The company said the car relied only on its automated driving system for the run.

The autonomous lap was slower than when a person drives the car, showing the gap between software control and what professional drivers can do at the car’s limits. Xiaomi said the autonomous lap was 3 minutes and 7 seconds slower than a human-driven lap.

The test nevertheless provides a measurable starting point for future upgrades to autonomous performance.

High-voltage EV platform delivers over 1,000 horsepower

The YU7 GT uses an 897-volt silicon carbide electrical system and a 101.7-kWh ternary lithium battery. Xiaomi built this setup to keep performance strong during repeated hard driving, like on the track, where electric powertrains are pushed to their limits.

The car’s power comes from Xiaomi’s Super Motor V8s EVO, which is designed to run efficiently and maintain steady power. The system also has cooling features to handle heat during fast acceleration, braking, and sharp turns.

The YU7 GT’s propulsion system delivers up to 738 kilowatts, or 1,003 horsepower. Xiaomi said the SUV can go from 0 to 62 mph in 2.92 seconds and reach a top speed of 186 mph.

Engineers also worked to make sure the battery lasts under heavy use. The cooling system helps control temperature changes during quick energy use and keeps the current steady across the battery cells.

Fast charging and long-range capability

Besides strong performance, Xiaomi gave the YU7 GT a high-voltage charging system to cut down on charging time.

According to the company, the vehicle can add up to 354 miles of range in just 15 minutes if charging conditions are right. This charging approach is meant to solve common problems with high-performance EVs, where fast charging and constant power use can cause a lot of heat.

The YU7 GT has a certified CLTC range of 438 miles on a full charge, so it can go long distances while still offering strong track performance.

Sales figures show cooling demand after launch

The YU7 GT launched in China with a starting price of 389,900 yuan, or about $57,600. The fully loaded version costs 429,900 yuan, or around $63,500.

According to China EV DataTracker, Xiaomi delivered 8,736 YU7 GTs in May 2026, which is 11.5 percent less than the 9,876 delivered in April. This drop comes after much higher sales earlier in the product cycle, with 37,869 units in January and 39,089 in December 2025.

Even though sales have slowed, Xiaomi’s Nürburgring achievement shows the company’s bigger goals beyond just selling cars. By testing autonomous-driving software on one of the toughest tracks, it is evaluating how future systems might handle real-world challenges and working to improve performance and safety.
