





















China’s Yuedong LNG Terminal in Guangdong province is set to add three massive storage tanks, each with a capacity of 240,000 cubic meters, in a project that could mark a new milestone for large-scale liquefied natural gas infrastructure.
French LNG containment specialist GTT said it has received an order from China Chengda Engineering Co., Ltd. for the design of the three very large onshore LNG storage tanks.
The tanks will be built for PipeChina Group Co., Ltd. as part of the Yuedong LNG Terminal project in Jieyang City, a strategic natural gas hub in South China.
Once completed, the tanks will be the largest onshore LNG storage tanks in the world to use GTT’s GST membrane full-containment technology, according to the company. Delivery of the three tanks is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2028.
Each of the three tanks will be able to store 240,000 cubic meters of LNG, giving the terminal a major boost in storage capacity as China continues to expand its natural gas import and distribution network.
The Yuedong LNG Terminal is located in Guangdong province, one of China’s most important industrial and energy-consuming regions.
The project is expected to support the country’s broader effort to strengthen LNG storage, improve energy security, and build more flexible gas infrastructure across southern China.
The use of GTT’s GST membrane full-containment technology is central to the project.
The company said the technology offers several advantages over traditional land-based LNG storage tank designs, particularly in terms of material efficiency, insulation, and storage density.
According to GTT, the design can reduce steel requirements by 40% compared with traditional LNG storage tank technology. The reduction in steel use is expected to contribute to lower emissions across the value chain.
The tanks will also feature optimized insulation, which GTT said can help deliver high and consistent energy performance. Another advantage of the system is compactness.
The company said GST technology can provide up to 10 percent more LNG storage capacity within the same footprint.
While the tanks are being designed primarily for LNG, they will also be capable of storing other liquefied gases.
These include ethane, propane, ethylene, and ammonia, giving the infrastructure additional flexibility as future energy and industrial requirements evolve.

The project adds to China’s ongoing buildout of LNG import and storage assets as the country works to reinforce its natural gas network and meet rising demand across key economic regions.
