A hobbyist maker has transformed a popular science fiction character into a functional desktop robot, blending 3D printing with voice technology.
The life-size replica, inspired by the iconic protocol droid from Star Wars, can listen to spoken commands and respond in a familiar, character-like voice.

DIY AI droid
Sam Potozkin, a researcher at Chapman University in California, spent months crafting a life-size C-3PO head, transforming a simple fan idea into a functional, voice-interactive robot.
What began as a tribute to Star Wars evolved into a working system that can listen to spoken input and respond in the droid’s familiar voice, bringing a piece of science fiction into everyday spaces, reports Techeblog.
The build used simple, widely available tools but required a lot of patience to get a polished result. The head was first 3D-printed using a desktop machine and plastic filament, leaving visible lines and rough spots on the surface. To fix this, the maker spent hours sanding it by hand until it became smooth.
Next came painting. A base primer was applied to prepare the surface, followed by several layers of chrome-like paint to create a shiny, metallic look. To match the familiar gold color, a light yellow-orange layer was added on top. Finally, a clear protective coating was applied to seal everything in and give it a glossy, finished appearance—similar to what you see on a new car’s paint.
Despite a setback when the piece fell and cracked, quick repairs using glue and putty allowed the project to continue without major delays. The result is a polished, expressive replica that not only captures the look of the iconic droid but also adds interactivity, reports Techeblog.
“This project combines physical hardware with real-time AI to create a fully interactive droid. It also draws on Communication Theory to shape how the system interprets and responds to human interaction,” said Potozkin, in a post on LinkedIn.
Interactive robot head
The system is built around a Raspberry Pi 5, which runs the entire AI pipeline locally without needing external devices.
A microphone captures spoken input, while an unusual audio component—an exciter—uses the head’s shell itself to produce sound through vibration, creating a more immersive voice than standard speakers. All hardware is integrated into a simple custom stand made from easily available materials, reports Hackster.
On the software side, the setup follows a multi-step voice assistant pipeline. Speech is converted to text, processed by a language model, and passed through a personality layer designed to mimic C-3PO’s formal, anxious tone. The response is then turned back into speech using a voice model inspired by the original character, with added effects to recreate its mechanical sound.
Interactions feel natural, though slight delays can occur. Performance issues were reduced through code optimizations. The system is fully self-contained, requiring no smartphone or external computer, reports Techeblog.
All code and 3D files are publicly available on GitHub, along with detailed documentation explaining the pipeline. The project reflects a step toward creating robots that can interact with people in real-world environments.
