Modern submarines combine stealth, advanced sensors, and long-range weapons to operate undetected.

Submarines are far more than a vessel that disappears underwater. The best boats can launch cruise missiles, track enemy warships across entire oceans, deploy special forces, and remain hidden for months at a time.

Measuring submarine power isn’t simply about size or firepower. Stealth, sensors, endurance, and mission flexibility matter just as much. With that in mind, here are seven of the most formidable submarines operating today.

1. Virginia-class Block V (United States)

Widely regarded as the benchmark for modern attack submarines, the Virginia-class Block V combines exceptional stealth, advanced sonar systems, and unmatched mission flexibility. The latest boats incorporate the Virginia Payload Module, dramatically increasing cruise missile capacity while preserving the class’s intelligence-gathering and special operations capabilities. 

Armed with Tomahawk missiles and Mk 48 torpedoes, the Virginia can hunt submarines, strike land targets, and support covert operations. Its continuous upgrades and large production run make it arguably the most capable all-around submarine operating today.

2. Yasen-M class (Russia)

Russia’s Yasen-M is among the most heavily armed attack submarines ever built. Designed as a multirole platform, it can launch Kalibr cruise missiles, Oniks anti-ship missiles, and Zircon hypersonic weapons from vertical launch tubes. 

The class combines long-range strike capability with advanced sensors and improved stealth over earlier Russian submarines. While fewer have been built than the Virginia class, the Yasen-M remains one of the most formidable undersea combat platforms in service.

3. Suffren-class (France)

The Suffren-class, also known as the Barracuda class, represents France’s most advanced attack submarine. Designed for intelligence gathering, anti-submarine warfare, land attack, and special forces missions, it combines a compact nuclear reactor with advanced acoustic stealth measures. 

The class can deploy cruise missiles, heavyweight torpedoes, and naval commandos while remaining exceptionally difficult to detect. Its sophisticated sensor suite and modern design make it one of Europe’s most capable underwater combat systems.

4. Astute-class (United Kingdom)

The Astute-class is the most advanced attack submarine ever built for the Royal Navy. Known for its quiet operation and powerful sonar suite, it can reportedly detect vessels hundreds of miles away under favorable conditions. 

Armed with Tomahawk cruise missiles and Spearfish heavyweight torpedoes, the class provides Britain with a potent long-range strike capability. Its reactor is designed to operate throughout the submarine’s service life without refueling, reducing maintenance demands and increasing availability.

5. Borei-A class (Russia)

Unlike attack submarines, the Borei-A serves as a strategic nuclear deterrent. Carrying Bulava submarine-launched ballistic missiles, each submarine can deliver multiple nuclear warheads across intercontinental distances. 

The improved Borei-A design incorporates quieter propulsion, enhanced electronics, and improved survivability compared with earlier Russian ballistic missile submarines. As the backbone of Russia’s sea-based nuclear deterrent, the class plays a critical role in the country’s strategic defense posture.

6. Taigei-class (Japan)

Japan’s Taigei-class is one of the most advanced conventionally powered submarines ever constructed. It features next-generation lithium-ion battery technology, allowing longer submerged endurance and improved performance compared with traditional diesel-electric submarines. 

Designed primarily for operations in the Indo-Pacific, the class combines advanced sensors, low acoustic signatures, and powerful torpedo armament. Many naval analysts consider it among the world’s most capable non-nuclear submarines.

7. Type 095 class (China)

Although much remains classified, the Type 095 is expected to become China’s most advanced nuclear-powered attack submarine. Analysts believe it incorporates significant improvements in stealth, sensors, and missile capacity over previous Chinese designs. Satellite imagery and defense assessments indicate the class is intended to compete more directly with leading Western and Russian submarines. As China’s naval ambitions expand, the Type 095 is likely to become a key component of the People’s Liberation Army Navy’s undersea force.
