2,000-year-old Roman bread discovered at famous military ...

Archaeologists recently made a groundbreaking discovery at the Vindonissa heritage site in Switzerland: the first loaf of Roman bread ever found in the country. This remarkable find was unearthed at the earliest military camp discovered in the area, which holds national significance due to its Roman remains.

During a routine survey in preparation for a housing development in Winsch, local authorities stumbled upon the former Roman camp in August 2025. This site is not just any camp; it is the earliest military camp in Vindonissa.

For over 100 years, this soil has been excavated, consistently yielding impressive artifacts related to legionary life. The discovery of the traces of the first troop camp marks a significant and groundbreaking moment in archaeological research.

The first Roman camp at famous archaeological site

The site features the same V-shaped ditches that pioneering archaeologists found 90 years ago in Königsfelden Park. This discovery prompted researchers to investigate further and determine the size of the first Roman camp.

The fortifications on the southern and western sides stretch 1,312 feet long, predating the 1st-century legionary camp for which Vindonissa is famous. This camp began as a temporary military base before expanding into a permanent outpost.

Archaeologists are now left wondering if the expansion occurred during the reign of Emperor Augustus or his successor, Tiberius; this remains to be determined.

Within the first camp, which was preserved because the Romans built a road over it, archaeologists discovered two identical groups of rooms adjacent to a larger one that contained a hearth, according to a press release.

Although these rooms yielded a number of tools, such as spearheads and projectile points, it was a black, charred block that captured the team’s attention. This object was encased in soil and was quickly transported to the restoration laboratory of the cantonal archaeology department. Thereafter, a dedicated team began removing the soil from what appeared to be an unremarkable lump.

Groundbreaking bread

As expected by the archaeologists, this was no ordinary find. An archaeobotanist from the Integrative and Natural Science Prehistoric Archaeology department at the University of Basel announced that this object was likely a loaf of bread measuring 1.18 inches thick and 3.94 inches in diameter. Archaeologists have planned to transfer this small flatbread to a laboratory in Vienna to analyze its ingredients.

In homage to a famous line from Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, “even the smallest person can change the course of the future,” this small loaf emphasizes the importance of Vindonissa in the field of archaeological science and for Roman research. One person’s mistake has become an archaeologist’s treasure. The excavation at Zürcherstrasse is set to conclude in July 2026, as per the press release. Archaeologists will open the site to the public on May 9, 2026, preserving the legacy of Vindonissa as an educational platform that connects the present with the Roman past.

“The terrain in Windisch… continues to yield spectacular archaeological discoveries to this day. The most recent examples are the site of the eastern camp gate discovered by archaeologists of the canton of Aargau in 2014 and the previously unknown burial ground in Brugg-Remigersteig, which was unearthed in 2012,” concluded Vindonissa Museum.
