Google Search now uses AI agents, multimodal search, and custom app generation to complete tasks.

Google is turning Search into an AI-powered assistant platform capable of reasoning, monitoring tasks, generating custom interfaces, and taking actions on behalf of users.

Announced during Google I/O, the company’s latest Search overhaul pushes far beyond traditional keyword-based web search. The update introduces AI agents, conversational search, multimodal inputs, and agentic coding capabilities directly inside Search.

Google said AI Mode now has more than one billion monthly users, with query volumes more than doubling every quarter since launch. The company is also replacing the traditional Search experience with a redesigned AI-first search box powered by Gemini 3.5 Flash.

Instead of typing short keywords, users can now interact with Search using longer conversational prompts, images, files, videos, and even Chrome tabs. The system can also maintain context across follow-up questions while surfacing increasingly relevant sources and links.

Search becomes assistant

The biggest shift comes from Google’s new “Search agents,” autonomous AI systems designed to continuously monitor the web and complete ongoing tasks for users.

According to Google, these agents can track apartment listings, monitor product drops, follow sports updates, and deliver synthesized updates based on user-defined preferences.

“Operating in the background, 24/7, these agents intelligently reason across information to find exactly what you need at exactly the right moment,” the company said.

Google is also expanding agentic booking capabilities. Users will be able to ask Search to find and book local services or experiences based on detailed requests, such as locating private karaoke rooms or scheduling beauty appointments.

For some businesses, Google said Search will even call companies on behalf of users.

The company is also introducing “agentic coding” inside Search through Google Antigravity and Gemini 3.5 Flash. The feature allows Search to dynamically generate interfaces, simulations, graphs, trackers, and mini-apps tailored to user requests.

AI builds software

Google said users could ask Search to create custom dashboards for ongoing tasks such as fitness tracking, wedding planning, or home moving.

Rather than simply linking users to third-party websites or apps, Search can now generate interactive tools on demand using live data sources like weather, maps, shopping information, and reviews.

“Search can build the ideal response, in the right format for your question — completely on the fly,” Google said.

The company is also expanding its “Personal Intelligence” capabilities to nearly 200 countries and territories. Users can connect services such as Gmail, Google Photos, and eventually Google Calendar to provide Search with additional personal context.

Google said users remain in control of these integrations and can decide when to connect personal applications.

The announcements signal one of the biggest changes to Google Search in decades. While the company said users will still see traditional search results and links, the platform is increasingly shifting toward AI-generated answers, autonomous agents, and task completion systems.

The move also intensifies competition with AI-driven search rivals such as OpenAI, Perplexity AI, and Microsoft Copilot, all of which are pushing conversational AI as an alternative to conventional web search.
