The trial deployment of humanoid robot soldiers in Ukraine has highlighted both the promise and current limitations of the technology. heheheheh

Developed by US-based robotics firm Foundation and transferred to Ukraine in February 2026, two Phathom MK-1 robots were tested mainly for logistics and supply missions in hazardous areas.

According to officials, the trials, conducted with support from the US government and Ukrainian officials, demonstrated the platform’s potential for frontline support roles.

However, the Phantom MK-1 remains far from a battlefield “super soldier,” with limited payload capacity, no waterproofing, and battery endurance insufficient for large-scale operational use.

In October 2025, Foundation introduced the Phantom MK-1, a humanoid robot developed for military applications and considered one of the first humanoid platforms designed with combat operations in mind.

Humanoid combat test

The trial deployment of two Phantom MK-1 humanoid robots in Ukraine has highlighted both the potential and current limitations of the technology.

The robots, transferred to Ukraine for testing in February 2026, were primarily assigned to logistics missions in hazardous areas. According to Foundation CEO Sankaet Pathak, the tests were conducted with Ukrainian officials and supported by the US government, demonstrating the usefulness of humanoid systems for such tasks, reports Militarnyi.

Despite the successful trials, the Phantom MK-1 remains far from the concept of a battlefield “super soldier.” The robot can carry only around 44 pounds (20 kilograms) of payload, is not waterproof, and lacks the battery endurance required for large-scale deployment.

Foundation plans to address these shortcomings with the Phantom 2, which is expected to be sent to Ukraine later in 2026. Pathak said the upgraded model will have “superhuman” capabilities and double the payload capacity of the Phantom MK-1.

Humanoid warfare future

The company believes the Ukraine trials could strengthen cooperation with the US military. Foundation has already secured government research contracts worth $24 million to evaluate robotic systems for inspection, logistics, and weapons-related tasks across the US Army, Navy, and Air Force.

According to Pathak, discussions with government officials have increasingly focused on scaling deployment rather than research alone. The company aims to field its technology within the US military and, if required, in frontline conflict zones within the next 12 to 18 months, reports Militarnyi.

Additional concerns include the risk of captured systems exposing sensitive data, vulnerability to signal jamming or spoofing, and the limitations of artificial intelligence, which can produce hallucinations, exhibit algorithmic bias, or experience behavioral drift during real-world operations.

Foundation is accelerating the development of military-capable humanoid robots and plans to manufacture up to 50,000 units by the end of 2027. At the center of this effort is the Phantom MK-1, a humanoid robot designed for both industrial and defense applications, placing it among a small number of dual-use robotic systems.

The Phantom MK-1 stands approximately 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighs between 175 and 180 pounds (79–82 kilograms). It is being developed to perform a range of tasks in environments that may be too dangerous for human personnel. Intended missions include reconnaissance, bomb disposal, and other high-risk ground operations.

The robot is designed to support military activities by carrying out surveillance and logistics tasks while operating in hazardous conditions. It can also be used to handle dangerous materials during missions, reducing risks to troops. Foundation sees the Phantom MK-1 as a platform that could expand the role of humanoid robots in both defense and industrial sectors.
