The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has renewed the operating license for Duke Energy’s Robinson Nuclear Plant for an additional 20 years, extending its operational life until 2050.

The plant, located in Hartsville, South Carolina, generates 759 megawatts of electricity, which is a capacity sufficient to power approximately 570,000 homes.

“Extending the operating life of this proven asset helps us deliver low-cost, always-on electricity for customers while supporting jobs and energy security for the region,” said Steven Capps, chief nuclear officer for Duke Energy. 

This facility is the second in Duke Energy’s fleet to receive a subsequent license renewal, following the Oconee Nuclear Station’s renewal in 2025.

“Robinson provides enough energy to power 570,000 homes and plays an important role in protecting reliability and affordability for customers as regional electricity demand continues to grow,” said Duke Energy in a press release.

The facility supports nearly 500 jobs and contributes approximately $28 million in annual tax revenue to Darlington County and the Pee Dee region. 

Comprehensive safety evaluation

To prepare for this extended period of operation, Duke Energy has completed $1.7 billion in equipment upgrades at the site. 

Nuclear energy currently accounts for 51% of the electricity generated for Duke Energy’s customers in the Carolinas.

The company has announced plans to seek similar 20-year renewals for all 11 of its nuclear units to maintain its current generation portfolio.

Federal licensing through the NRC requires a comprehensive safety evaluation and technical analysis. This process ensures that the facility’s systems and structures can continue to function securely throughout the extended period. 

“Robinson’s original 40-year operating license was granted by the NRC in 1970, making it one of the first commercial nuclear power plants in the Southeast,” added the press release.

Its first 20-year renewal previously extended its operation from 2010 to 2030, and this latest NRC decision adds another two decades to that term.

Extension preserves an energy source

South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster commented on the decision, stating that the extension preserves an energy source that the state relies on as demand grows. He noted that the facility provides power used to support local industry and communities in the Pee Dee region.

Congressman Russell Fry noted that it allows Duke Energy to continue supplying electricity to residents and businesses in Darlington County.

Fry remarked that the plant has functioned as a component of the state’s nuclear energy infrastructure for over 50 years.

The continuation of the plant’s operations is intended to provide cost-effective generation for customers by utilizing an established facility rather than constructing new power plants.

Duke Energy will continue to file for subsequent license renewals for its remaining nuclear plants in the coming years to maintain a consistent power supply.

“Robinson’s subsequent license renewal reflects the strength of our safety culture and the rigorous work our teams do every day to support our communities,” concluded Capps.
