Ukraine hits Russia with massive 500-drone strike, fires ...

Ukraine has launched a massive drone strike on Russia’s capital, Moscow, on May 17, 2026. Dubbed the “largest in over a year,” the attack was part of a larger 500-drone strike launched against Russia overnight, according to military officials.

According to reports, somewhere in the order of 120 drones were specifically targeted at Moscow. Despite the presence of air defenses, several drones reportedly got through, resulting in infrastructure damage, fires, and fatalities.

Ukraine was also targeted by Russian drones the same night, with around 290 drones launched against it. This makes that night one of the largest mutual drone-exchange events in the war and history.

According to CNN, a Russian woman was killed when a drone hit her home in Khimki (a town just Northwest of Moscow). Two Russian men were also killed in Mytishchi, northwest of Moscow.

Moscow hit by drones

Twelve people were injured in Moscow, including workers at an oil refinery. According to Russia’s Defense Ministry, around 560 drones were intercepted, 120 of which were heading for Moscow.

Debris from intercepted drones damaged buildings and started fires, and also fell on the grounds of Sheremetyevo Airport. No injuries or damage have been reported at the airport, however.

According to Ukrainian media, the attacks were launched to damage and disrupt Russia’s oil refinery facilities, storage terminals, and fuel distribution nodes. This included, according to the Kyiv Post, the Moscow Oil Refinery in Kapotnya and the Solnechnogorsk oil terminal.

Other targets appear to have also included Russia’s “Elma” technology park in Zelenograd. The former are critical to Russia’s economy and disrupt its military machine. Even a temporary disruption would, in theory, result in logistical issues for Russia’s armed forces.

The latter is interesting too, as Russia is struggling under global sanctions to maintain its technological edge. This includes things like advanced electronics production, optics, military microelectronics, drone and missile component supply.

Any disruption here could delay, even stall, such activities. Beyond the strategic impact of the Ukrainian attack, targeting Russia’s capital is also psychologically impactful.

Tit-for-tat drone attacks

For most Russians, the war in Ukraine feels “far away,” so attacks on their capital suddenly bring the war closer to home. It also embarrasses the Kremlin and forces Russia to invest more in its domestic defense rather than offensive capabilities.

The attack on Russia is also interesting in terms of the fact that it may hint at a few developments in the war. The first is that Russia’s air defenses may not be as good as claimed.

It could also hint at the fact that Ukraine’s drone production and coordination is now very sophisticated. Or, indeed, both could be true.

What this means is that Ukraine has now advanced from a more guerrilla-style use of drones to a more state-level strategic air warfare capability. Whatever the case, it is becoming increasingly obvious that neither side can stop long-range drone penetration strikes 100%.

This means that either side can strike cities and infrastructure at will. The relatively low cost of drones means we could see the war effectively sustained for years with tit-for-tat attacks, unless one side’s industrial base collapses.
