For decades, helicopters have faced a fundamental engineering challenge. The faster they fly, the harder they become to control. As rotor blades approach the speed of sound, aerodynamic forces begin to limit performance in ways fixed-wing aircraft never experience.
Yet a handful of helicopters have pushed those boundaries. Through innovative rotor designs, powerful engines, and unconventional configurations, these aircraft have become the fastest production helicopters ever built. Here are seven that lead the pack.
1. Westland Lynx
Top speed: 249 mph (400.87 km/h)
The Westland Lynx remains the fastest conventional helicopter ever built. In 1986, a specially modified Lynx set the official Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI) helicopter speed record of 400.87 km/h (249.09 mph) a record that still stands today.
Developed as a multi-role military helicopter, the Lynx served in transport, reconnaissance, and anti-submarine warfare roles. Its advanced BERP rotor blades and upgraded engines enabled the record-breaking flight, demonstrating how aerodynamic rotor design can dramatically improve helicopter performance.
2. Mil Mi-35M (Mi-24 Hind)
Top speed: 193 mph (310 km/h)
The Mil Mi-35M is one of the fastest and most heavily armed attack helicopters ever placed into production. An upgraded version of the legendary Mi-24 Hind, it combines troop transport capability with substantial firepower, including anti-tank missiles, rockets, and a 23 mm cannon.
Its streamlined fuselage and powerful engines enable it to reach speeds uncommon for helicopters, allowing it to rapidly support troops or strike targets across the battlefield. It remains in service with numerous countries worldwide.
3. Sikorsky CH-53K King Stallion
Top speed: 196 mph (315 km/h)
Although designed primarily as a heavy-lift helicopter, the CH-53K King Stallion is remarkably fast for its size. Built for the U.S. Marine Corps, it can transport armored vehicles, artillery, and large cargo loads while operating from amphibious assault ships.
Three powerful engines, a composite airframe, and advanced fly-by-wire flight controls allow it to combine exceptional lifting capability with impressive cruise and maximum speeds. It is currently the most capable heavy-lift helicopter in Western service.
4. Kamov Ka-52 Alligator
Top speed: 186 mph (300 km/h)
Russia’s Ka-52 Alligator combines speed with exceptional maneuverability. Its distinctive coaxial rotor system eliminates the need for a tail rotor, improving agility while reducing power losses.
Designed as a reconnaissance and attack helicopter, the Ka-52 carries anti-tank missiles, guided rockets, and a 30 mm cannon. Its advanced avionics and high-speed performance make it one of the fastest operational attack helicopters flying today.
5. AgustaWestland AW101 Merlin
Top speed: 193 mph (309 km/h)
The AW101 Merlin is a versatile three-engine helicopter used for anti-submarine warfare, search and rescue, and military transport. Despite its large size, it achieves speeds exceeding 300 km/h while carrying troops or specialized mission equipment. Its long range and high reliability have made it a preferred platform for several NATO operators, including the United Kingdom and Italy.
6. Boeing CH-47F Chinook
Top speed: 196 mph (315 km/h)
The tandem-rotor Chinook has remained one of the world’s premier heavy-lift helicopters for more than six decades. Its twin-rotor configuration eliminates the need for a tail rotor and allows more engine power to be devoted to lift and forward speed. Modern CH-47F variants transport troops, artillery, and supplies across challenging terrain while maintaining speeds that rival many dedicated transport helicopters.
7. NHIndustries NH90
Top speed: 186 mph (300 km/h)
Developed by a European consortium, the NH90 serves as both a tactical transport and a naval helicopter. Built with extensive composite materials and fly-by-wire controls, it combines excellent performance with modern avionics and survivability features. Capable of troop transport, anti-submarine warfare, and disaster relief missions, the NH90 is among the fastest medium military helicopters currently in operational service.
