The latest example of the client-focused role for agentic AI is the new Amazon Quick desktop application, which the company just announced as part of a batch of news from their What's Next with AWS event.
The Quick desktop app builds on Amazon’s previously announced mobile and web-based apps, but critically, adds the ability to tap into all the data, email, chat threads and more found on your local PC. Even more importantly, it leverages on-board computing resources to do so.
Philosophically, this is a big deal because it validates the role of client devices in agentic AI. Practically, it makes sense because today’s AI PCs already contain meaningful local compute resources. Economically, it could matter even more because local pre-processing and orchestration can reduce unnecessary cloud calls.
The challenge for Amazon is that there are a lot of competitive options being brought to market that are going to make it difficult to rise above the noise. Plus, while AWS has an enormous installed base of companies who rely on its cloud-based services, it's not considered a serious player in the world of desktop applications.
