While Fox has renewed the vast majority of its unscripted slate, there were a couple of shows that didn’t make the cut this year.
The network is benching So You Think You Can Dance and Jim Jeffries-hosted The Snake.
Neither move is a huge surprise; The Snake didn’t take much of a bite out of the ratings and SYTYCD judge Nigel Lythgoe got tarnished with a sexual assault and gender violence lawsuit by American Idol’s Paula Abdul since the last season aired.
So You Think You Can Dance aired pretty regularly between 2005 with its debut season through to the summer of 2019 with Season 16. It returned for Season 17 with Stephen ‘Twitch’ Boss, JoJo Siwa and Leah Remini as judges in summer of 2022 and for Season 18 with Siwa and Dancing with the Stars duo Allison Holker and Maksim Chmerkovski in spring 2024. Cat Deeley hosted.
Michael Thorn, President of the Fox Television Network, speaking on its pre-Upfronts press call said, “It’s obviously a really important show in the history of Fox, but right now there’s no plans to order another season. We’ve had conversations about it, but nothing formal.”
Lythgoe’s lawsuit was settled in December 2024.
So You Think You Can Dance is produced by Sony Pictures Television’s 19 Entertainment and Dick Clark Productions. The series was executive produced by Daniel Martin who also served as showrunner and by series co-creator Nigel Lythgoe, Barry Adelman, Eli Holzman and Aaron Saidman.
Meanwhile, The Snake, hosted by Australian stand-up comic Jeffries, is one and done after premiering in June 2025. The social experiment series followed 15 people from various professions trying to manipulate their way to becoming that week’s snake, who decides who stays and who leaves the show, through a series of challenges.
It was produced by Jersey Shore creator SallyAnn Salsano and her 495 Productions banner. Salsano served as showrunner and exec produced alongside Frank Miccolis and Kim Green.
