‘The Furious’, ‘Stop! That! Train!’, ‘The Amazing Digital...

Lionsgate’s martial arts action film The Furious and RuPaul-starring Stop! That! Train! debuted to nos. 8 and 9 at the domestic box office with the The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act from Fathom rounding out the top ten in week 2.

The Furious from Lionsgate kicked up $2.75 million on 1,251 screens — at 97% Certified Fresh with Rotten Tomatoes critics, 95% with audiences. The studio acquired most worldwide rights to The Furious — excluding China, where it opened at no. 1 this weekend — following a raucous premiere at TIFF Midnight Madness. Lionsgate said the title, directed by Kenji Tanigaki, will be profitable and called the release an example of its “commitment to serving audiences and exhibitors with a diverse slate of original theatrical films, and forging relationships with rising filmmakers who deliver a fresh and distinctive point of view.”

Stop! That! Train! from Bleecker Street debuted at $$2 million on 1,161 screens. Bleecker and producer World of Wonder said they’re “very pleased with the enthusiastic response from both fans of RuPaul’s Drag Race and newcomers alike. On the heels of great reviews and a New York Times Critic’s Pick, we have had multiple sellouts in major markets and look forward to continuing to take audiences nationwide on this hilarious ride.”

The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act grossed $1.76 million for the weekend on 2,221 screens for a cume pushing $29 million.

As reported, box office stunners by YouTubers Curry Barker and Kane Parsons continue in wide release. Obsession from Focus Features in no. 2 in week 5 with a cume topping $188 million. A24’s Backrooms is no. 4 in week 3 for $160 million.

Pressure, also from Focus. grossed $1.1 million in week 3 for a $14 million cume.

Most indies reporting so far this weekend are wide. Exceptions include Rialto Pictures’ rerelease of Carol Reed’s classic 1949 film noir The Third Man, starring Orson Wells and written by Graham Greene, which did nicely at two theaters in new 35mm prints struck from an original internegative. The estimated $19k gross was split between $11k at New York’s Film Forum and $8k at the New Beverly in LA.  

Oscilloscope’s documentary Underland grossed $1.4k on 2 screens in week 2 for a $8.5k gross. By Robert Petit, narrated by Sandra Hüller and produced by Darren Aronofsky. The cinematic voyage beneath the surface of the earth is based on the book of the same name by Robert McFarlane.
