EXCLUSIVE: Disney+ has acquired UK and Ireland rights to Australian series Gnomes.
AMC Global Media has snapped up Spain and Portugal rights to the six-part show, which is a co-production between Total Fiction and Screen Invaders. L.A.-based Happy Accidents is shopping the series.
The series follows Asa Butterfield (Sex Education, Unchosen) as police officer Arnold Kipps and Megan Smart (Class of ’07) as his ex-partner Ellie McKay.
Per the synopsis, the pair live in Nompton – the once-thriving ‘Home of the Gnome’ – that is now a forgotten town with a bizarre claim to fame. Butterfield’s small-town Senior Sergeant Kipps’ previous biggest headache was his ex-girlfriend and ex-partner Ellie McKay returning to shut down his station until he accidentally awakens an ancient Gnome Queen, unleashing a full-scale ceramic apocalypse. Kipps and Ellie have to put their differences aside and lead an unlikely army of misfits and a pair of undercover demon hunters against a horde of bloodthirsty garden gnomes.
Screen Invaders founder Joel Kohn is the creator, with Holly A. Hines (Ginny & Georgia, Fortitude) and Eric Jarboe (Falling for Christmas, The Princess Switch) the executive producers for Happy Accidents. John Molloy (Barons, The Gloaming) and Richard Kelly (The Tailings, Jones Family Christmas), are EPs for Total Fiction. Matthias Hoene is lead director, exec producer and director of four episodes.
We first revealed news of the series in February 2025 as part of Australian streamer Stan’s slate. ZDFneo in Germany is attached through ZDF Studios’ subsidiary production company Network Movie.
Kohn made his directorial debut in episode five and second unit director throughout the rest of the series. Tegan Higginbotham, the series writer, also stars in the series as Josie, Arnold Kipps’ police partner. Higginbotham is head writer with Paul Verhoeven the co-writer.
Gnomes was recently showcased at the Series Mania Forum, where it was touted as a show to watch, as we profiled at the time.
Hines and Jarboe, Happy Accidents co-CEOs, said in a statement: “From start to finish, it has been a joy to bring Gnomes to life. Wildly imaginative, hilariously offbeat, and unlike anything else in comedy horror, it is truly a thrill ride that is equal parts ridiculous and terrifying.
“Finding the perfect homes for the series with Disney+ in the UK & Ireland and AMC Global Media for Spain and Portugal, following strong competitive interest, feels incredibly rewarding. We can’t wait for audiences to discover the show and experience its madness for themselves.”
