Two-time Oscar and Emmy nominee Mary McDonnell has joined the cast of Fox‘s upcoming Baywatch reboot in a recurring role.
McDonnell will play Gayle, Hobie’s (Stephen Amell) and Charlie’s (Jessica Belkin) grandmother, a sophisticated woman with a wryly funny presence. She cares deeply for her family and is there for them even when they’re not sure they want her help. Gayle and Hobie have a long, complicated history, but no matter how much time or distance gets between them, family always seems to find its way back together. She’s learned a thing or two about second chances over the years, and she shares that wisdom with humor and grace.
In the Baywatch reboot, scheduled to launch on Fox in January, wild-child Hobie (Amell) serves as a Baywatch Captain, following in the footsteps of his legendary father, Mitch. Hobie’s world is turned upside down when daughter Charlie (Belkin) shows up on his doorstep eager to carry on the Buchannon family legacy.
In addition to Amell and Belkin, the cast includes Hassie Harrison, Thaddeus LaGrone as well as David Chokachi reprising his OG role of Cody Madison. Livvy Dunne also recurs.
Fox Entertainment and Fremantle are co-producing the reboot, with Matt Nix serving as showrunner and exec producing alongside premiere episode director McG, Michael Berk, Greg Bonann, Doug Schwartz, Dante Di Loreto and Mike Horowitz. Fox Entertainment Global holds all domestic rights, with Fremantle managing all international sales.
McDonnell can currently be seen in Netflix’s The Boroughs, executive produced by The Duffer Brothers. She next appears in Marvel’s Visionquest series and the indie film One Second After. McDonnell is repped by Innovative Artists and Anonymous Content.
