Ryan Gosling To Receive 40th Annual American Cinematheque Award
Pete Hammond · 2026-06-18 · via Deadline

After the success of his 2026 hit, Project Hail Mary, there is more good news this year for Ryan Gosling.

It was announced today that the star will be the 40th recipient of the American Cinematheque Award at a tribute to be held on Monday, November 2, 2026 at The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills. The American Cinematheque Awards gala is an annual fundraiser for the non-profit organization that continues its year-round programming at the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica, Los Feliz 3 Theatre in Los Feliz, and Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood.

American Cinematheque Board Chair Rick Nicita announced the selection by stating, “It is with tremendous pride that the American Cinematheque recognizes Ryan Gosling as the recipient of our 40th Annual American Cinematheque Award. Ryan represents everything this honor stands for — an artist of extraordinary range, depth and fearless creative commitment. From his early work in The Believer and Half Nelson, for which he earned an Academy Award nomination, to his breathtaking performances in Drive, Blue Valentine, La La Land, and his revelatory, scene-stealing turn in Barbie, Ryan has demonstrated a remarkable ability to inhabit characters with intelligence, vulnerability, and undeniable charisma. Most recently, his stunning lead performance in Project Hail Mary captivated audiences around the world, proving his extraordinary ability to carry a film with grace, wit, and profound emotional power. The film’s remarkable global box office success and overwhelming critical acclaim stand as a testament to Ryan’s singular star power and artistic gifts. What distinguishes Ryan is not simply his talent, but his unwavering dedication to meaningful, adventurous filmmaking. He consistently chooses projects that challenge audiences and inspire his fellow artists. The American Cinematheque is honored to celebrate this truly exceptional talent.”

The award comes on the heels of last year’s honoree, Michael B. Jordan who went on in March to win the Academy Award for Best Actor for Sinners. Gosling is expected to be a contender this year for Project Hail Mary.

And speaking of Oscar nominations Gosling may be the only modern actor to earn Oscar nominations for a micro-budget indie drama, a musical, and a comedy while also headlining influential arthouse cinema and major science-fiction blockbusters. Over the course of a career spanning more than two decades and 40 film and television credits, Gosling has firmly established himself as an actor who can do just about anything.

He first earned widespread critical acclaim with his Academy Award-nominated performance in Half Nelson and has since built a versatile filmography that includes The Notebook, Lars and the Real Girl, Blue Valentine, Drive, Crazy, Stupid, Love., The Ides of March, The Place Beyond the Pines, The Nice Guys, La La Land, The Big Short, Blade Runner 2049, First Man, The Gray Man, and Barbie. His portrayal of Ken in Barbie earned nominations from the Academy Awards, BAFTA Awards, SAG Awards, Golden Globe Awards, and Critics Choice Awards.

Gosling currently stars in and produced Project Hail Mary, the adaptation of Andy Weir’s bestselling novel directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. Hailed by critics and embraced by audiences worldwide, the film became the highest-grossing release in Amazon MGM Studios history and earned Gosling some of the strongest reviews of his career.

He will next star in Shawn Levy’s Star Wars: Starfighter, a standalone feature set several years after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. The film also stars Amy Adams, Matt Smith, Mia Goth, and Aaron Pierre and is scheduled for release on May 28, 2027.

Throughout his career, Gosling has collaborated with many of contemporary cinema’s most acclaimed filmmakers, including Greta Gerwig, Damien Chazelle, Denis Villeneuve, Derek Cianfrance, George Clooney, Adam McKay, Shane Black, David Leitch, and Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. As both an actor and producer, he continues to pursue a diverse range of projects across studio and independent filmmaking, consistently challenging himself with bold creative choices while helping shape the future of modern cinema.
