EXCLUSIVE: Kate Bustamante, who has overseen Hulu documentaries and series including Minding The Gap, Stolen Youth and Fyre Fraud, is leaving the streamer after nearly nine years.
Bustamante, who is Senior Manager, Original Documentaries, is exiting and relocating to Mexico City, where she will move into freelance consulting, development and producing.
Bustamante has been known to have a focus on underrepresented voices, particularly from the LGBTQ+ community and other credits include Look At Me: XXXTentacion, Captive Audience, Changing The Game, Devil in the Family and Perfect Wife.
In her note to colleagues, which has been seen by Deadline, Bustamante wrote, “There are decisions you make in life where you don’t know where they will lead. Nearly nine years ago I took a job at Hulu on its then-nascent documentary team. It was a bit of a gamble for me, never having worked in documentary before. All I knew was that I was deeply inspired by the executive running the department and knew that my perspective and input was going to be valued, which as a young creative is really all you can ask for.”
She added that Hulu has “taken me further in my career than I could’ve dreamed. It fostered my growth as a development executive and producer. It honed my creative abilities, helping me achieve deeper understanding of narrative and what makes stories resonate on a massive scale, while never sacrificing quality. It gave me the opportunity to be in key decision-making rooms and to develop a keen strategic mind. It’s pushed me to step into my power and advocate for better representation in the industry.”
Bustamante joined the streamer as an executive assistant in the content development team in 2017, having spent two years at Paradigm.
