The Wonderfools are coming to Netflix on May 15, but they’re not exactly the heroes the world might be hoping to get.
Netflix has dropped a trailer for its comic superhero series out of Korea, which reunites director Yoo In-sik of Extraordinary Attorney Woo with actor Park Eun-bin, who starred as the titular neurodivergent attorney.
Fair to say, this role is quite different, with Park starring alongside Cha Eun-woo, Choi Dae-hoon, Im Seong-jae, Kim Hae-sook, and Son Hyun-joo in a story set in 1999 about a motley crew of awkward, regular people who suddenly gain superpowers, but aren’t necessarily well suited to the responsibility that comes with.
Park stars as the charming and funny Eun Chae-ni, Haeseong City’s “biggest trainwreck,” who becomes entangled in the series’ unexpected events as she develops the power to teleport, zipping from one plac to another in a blur. Joining her are Un-jeong (Cha), who hides a secret telekinesis ability; Gyeong-hun (Choi) a “totally useless sticky guy” whose body sticks to everything; and Ro-bin (Im), who develops unpredictably destructive powers and leaves chaos in his wake.
The trailer sees Park and co playing a game of roadside acrostics as they peel onions, with cut scenes revealing how the friends first learned of their superpowers. There are flying cars held at bay by the power of telekenesis and Park teleporting, as the crew clumsily accept their new ‘hero’ roles and attempt to take on the villains threatening the peace of Haeseong City.
“Super anxious, aren’t you?,” says one of the gang. “Perhaps because we found out you have superpowers.”
Nangmancrew, Kakao Entertainment and Fantagio are making the show for Netflix, which continues the streamer’s investment in original Korean series and films. On Tuesday, the Motion Picture Association reported the Korean screen sector generated $17.1B in GDP last year.
