Tony Shalhoub (Monk, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) has been set as a recurring guest star on the upcoming CBS series Einstein. The series joins CBS’ 2026-27 broadcast season and is currently in production.
The role will reunite Shalhoub with the creator and executive producer of the hit USA Network series Monk, Andy Breckman, and executive producer Randy Zisk. Breckman and Zisk executive produce Einstein.
Einstein follows Lewis Einstein (Matthew Gray Gubler), the brilliant but directionless great-grandson of Albert Einstein. He spends his days as a comfortably tenured professor until his bad-boy antics land him in trouble with the law, and he is pressed into service helping Teri (Melissa Fumero), a local police detective, solve her most puzzling cases.
Lewis is a popular professor at Princeton … when he actually shows up for class. Irreverent and misguided, his genius and famous name weigh heavily on him, but using his gift to help solve homicides may — finally — offer his life some direction and purpose.
Shalhoub joins the series as Jack Einstein, Lewis Einstein’s father.
The series regular cast also includes Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor as Capt. Frost.
Andy Breckman, Randy Zisk, Michael Rauch, Tariq Jalil, Rose Hughes, Rodrigo Herrera Ibarguengoytia, and Laura Beetz executive produce Einstein. Gubler also serves as a producer. CBS Studios is the studio.
Shalhoub starred as the titular detective Adrian Monk for the show’s entire 8-season run on USA Network, plus one streaming movie, Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie, which premiered on Peacock in 2023. For his performance on the series, Shalhoub received three Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. His fourth Emmy win was for his supporting actor work on the Prime Video series The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.
Additional credits include the Men in Black franchise, Galaxy Quest, The Siege, The Man Who Wasn’t There, Big Night, Barton Fink, as well as voicing the character of Luigi in the Cars franchise. Shalhoub is repped by CAA.
