Giant, the four-time Tony-nominated Broadway production starring John Lithgow as scandal-plagued children’s author Roald Dahl, has recouped its $5.6 million capitalization just 10 weeks into its planned 16-week limited engagement.
Producers Brian and Dayna Lee, Stephanie Kramer and Nicole Kramer, Josh Fiedler and Robyn Goodman, and Royal Court Theatre made the announcement today. The production has played seven shows a week from March through May.
Written by Mark Rosenblatt and directed by Nicholas Hytner, the acclaimed Giant is currently playing at the Music Box Theatre, where the play routinely grosses in excess of a weekly $1 million, with more than 90% of seats typically sold. The production recently scored four Tony nominations, including Best Play, Best Direction of a Play (Hytner), Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play (Lithgow) and Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Play (Aya Cash).
In addition to Lithgow and Cash, the play stars Elliot Levey, Rachael Stirling, Stella Everett and David Manis.
Giant began Broadway performances on Wednesday, March 11, opened on Monday, March 23 and is playing through Sunday, June 28. A live taping of a London performance will be released to cinemas beginning November 19.
Giant is the latest Broadway production to announce recoupment in recent days, following Every Brilliant Thing, Just In Time, and the tours of Kimberly Akimbo and The Outsiders.
