SPOILER ALERT: This post contains spoilers for the sixth episode of Margo’s Got Money Troubles.
Nick Offerman’s grand entrance into Margo’s Got Money Troubles on Apple TV takes place technically in the first episode with Margo’s roommate Susie (Thaddea Graham) watching his old wrestling tapes on TV. His character more solidly enters the picture at the end of the second episode when he shows up to Margo’s apartment, clad in black and more reserved than his persona in the ring.
Jinx initially arrives to support his daughter Margo (Elle Fanning) after missing the news that she’s given birth to Bodhi while he was in rehab for drug addiction. He also aims to reconnect with Margo’s mother, Shyanne (Michelle Pfeiffer), but he quickly finds out that she is marrying Kenny (Greg Kinnear). He becomes a valuable teammate as Margo expands her OnlyFans and TikTok content in episode 6, titled “Grudge Match.”
“For Jinx, he’s so solipsistic and focused on himself that he probably doesn’t notice a lot about Susie, initially. He’s a baby looking for some milk. Eventually, though, he realizes that what he needs to do is double down on this new improvised family situation,” Offerman told Deadline. “One of the family members is Susie, who is dependable. And they are able to combine show biz forces in the OnlyFans art department, and it just becomes a natural friendship that I think is really gratifying.”
The sixth episode in the series sees Jinx and Susie team up with costuming and wrestling choreography so that Margo can make TikTok content with her “buddies” or collaborators Rose (Lindsey Normington) and KC (Rico Nasty). All the teamwork results in some very creative videos that chalk up to Margo’s art project and self expression, which is unique and stands out enough to get her major attention and more subscribers.
Offerman credits the show’s writing with how he is able to balance Jinx as a former pro wrestler and performer with the more solemn and isolated version who has just served a stint in rehab — including Rufi Thorpe, the author for her book on which the show is based, showrunner David E. Kelley and executive producer Eva Anderson as well as playwrights on staff in the writers room.
“[In the scripts] I happen to be a wrestler and also have these addiction issues. I have human foibles, and we all have that,” he said. “We all have the performance, the facade or carapace that we wear to shield ourselves from the world and say, ‘I’m a wrestler, I’m an accountant. I have incredible hair. I have blonde tips’ while inside, we’re making our mistakes and just trying to get loved or be loved. All I had to mainly do was learn my lines.”
As of the end of the end of episode six, family matters become complicated with a combination of a restraining order served to Jinx by Mark (Michael Angarano), Bodhi’s father, followed by Mark and his mother Elizabeth (Marcia Gay Harden) seeking full custody of the baby from Margo with paperwork served around the Christmas and New Year’s holidays.
