Triumph At The Games: ‘’84: The Summer Of Gold’ Shows How...
Matthew Care · 2026-05-18 · via Deadline

EXCLUSIVE: The U.S. Men’s Gymnastics Team has only won gold once at the Olympics – in 1984. That moment of glory, coming after the U.S. boycott of the 1980 games in Moscow, is recaptured in the documentary ’84: The Summer of Gold.

The film directed by 24-time Emmy-winner Nick Nanton is being presented at the Marché du Film in Cannes, with prospective buyers getting a first look at footage. ’84: The Summer of Gold is currently in production with an expected release date in summer 2028, just ahead of the return of the Olympic Games to Los Angeles, where they were held in 1984.

The film is being produced by Astonish Entertainment and DNA Films in association with Abundance Studios. It will include interviews with the five surviving members of the gold medal team: Bart Conner, Peter Vidmar, Mitch Gaylord, Tim Daggett, and Scott Johnson (their teammate Jim Hartung died earlier this year after a lengthy battle with throat cancer).

‘84: The Summer of Gold captures the story of a team that rose from the ashes of a stolen dream to reclaim their destiny,” notes a release. “Their journey began in the shadow of the 1980 Moscow Games boycott, a political maneuver that dashed the Olympic hopes of an entire generation. Four years later, these American athletes stepped onto the world stage in Los Angeles to fight for their dreams and the honor of their country, as the U.S. and Soviet Union remained locked in conflict, with Russia retaliating with their own boycott.”

The release continues, “For the first time in forty years, a documentary feature film plunges audiences into the high-stakes furnace of the 1984 Games through never-before-seen photos, footage and interviews reminiscing back on that unique time in U.S. and sports history. This is a visceral, front-row seat to an athletic revolution, weaving intimate legendary testimony with a vault of Olympic archival discovery that reveals the raw, human heart of the arena and the definitive account of a bond that transformed global tension in the most profound ways.”

In a statement, director Nick Nanton said, “This is more than a sports story, it’s a moment in history where perseverance, politics, and Olympic pride collided. After missing their chance in 1980, this team carried the weight of a nation into Los Angeles and achieved something no American men’s gymnastics team has done before or since. As we return to LA for the 2028 Games, it feels meaningful and important to revive this team’s story as a reminder to those who watched it, and as an inspiration to a generation that didn’t.”

Gold medalist Bart Conner commented, “This team wasn’t just competing for a medal, we were carrying four years of heartbreak, sacrifice, and unfinished dreams into Los Angeles. What we accomplished together still feels surreal, and I’m grateful this film will capture not just the victory, but the journey and brotherhood that made it possible.”

LHC, the PR, marketing and branding firm, which acts as a distribution liaison for select films, is helping to bring the project in front of potential buyers in the Cannes Market.

Producers of ‘84: The Summer of Gold include Julie Meates, Wayne Pernell, Charlie Epstein, Ryan Chute, Kathleen Forrest, Craig Lack, Peter D’Arruda, Gary Marriage Jr., Paul Peters, George McCranie , Francis X. Astorino, Richard Tyler, Bryan Gallinger, Kerin Cagle, Gwen Medved, Ray Seggern, Suzanne Nakano, Camilo R. Gomez, Dana Cowles, Cathy Cooper, Shaun Capps, Geoff Green, Dorothy Fischer, Elizabeth S. Jackson, and Edward Mafoud.

Executive producers include Kimberly Ku, Michael Lockwood, Michael Fomkin, Mike Conlon and Kevin Hodes.
