‘Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ With $747M+ WW Pushes Illumination-Nintendo Pic Franchise To $2B – Global Box Office
Anthonypauld · 2026-04-20 · via Deadline

The outer space plumbers continue to reign supreme around the world with an $83.2M global weekend ($35M dom, $48.2M overseas at 82 territories) taking Super Mario Galaxy Movie‘s global running cume to $747.4M ($355.2M domestic, $392.2M overseas). But the bigger deal is that the Illumination/Nintendo/Universal franchise through two pics has now clicked past $2 billion, becoming the 10. animated feature film series of all-time. Illumination’s Chris Meledandri now has three animated franchises in the top 10 including 1. Desppicable/Minions, No. 4 Ice Age and No 10. Super Mario.

As we told, you Super Mario Galaxy is officially the highest grossing movie year-to-date, finally unseating China’s race car pic Pegasus 3 ($647.8M).

The sequel’s sole opening was Israel with a No. 1 bow of $700K in line with Zootopia, Toy Story 4, and Incredibles 2. Japan, which is gonna be big, opens next weekend. The first movie did close to $102M, simply massive. Imax was responsible for $2M around the globe for the sequel taking the large format exhibitor’s running total to $36.2M.

Territory breakdowns:

France with $6M takes its cume to a near $34M, surpassing the lifetime of Toy Story 4, having crossed Minions 2 and Inside Out at the start of the weekend.

Mexico near $5M jumps cume to $55.5M, still No. 1. That total has now surpassed the lifetime of Barbie, and performance is above Minecraft and in line with Lilo & Stitch at the same point.

Australia with $4.1M still has the sequel at No. 1, close to more than double second-ranked Project Hail Mary with a running total of $23.5M ahead of the lifetimes of DM3 and Minions.

Germany remains No. 1 with $3.8M ahead of No. 2 Project Hail Mary, $34.3M cume.

UK & Ireland with a No. 1 $3.6M thanks to excellent Saturday/Sunday business offsetting the end of school holidays, and a running $44.1 cume. Still, daytime cinemagoing was impacted by hot and sunny weather across the market.

China grossed $2M this weekend to reach $17.1M cume, ranking No.5 in the market and in line with the first movie at the same point in time. The sequel has now surpassed the lifetime of Moana 2.

Part 2 is No. 1 in Brazil with $1.9M and a $12.3M cume, surpassing the lifetime of Frozen

Spain is also No. 1 with $1.8M, a $19.7M total, in line with the first film at the same point. Super Mario Galaxy has clicked past the lifetimes of Frozen, Minecraft and The Jungle Book.

Italy has $1.6M in its third weekend with a $14.8M cume, ahead of the lifetimes of Incredibles 2 and A Minecraft Movie.

Project Hail Mary‘s global running cume is up to $573.1M after a $41.4M fifth weekend ($20.4M domestic/$21M abroad, -33%) around the globe.

Top markets for the Lord-Miller directed and produced, Amy Pascal-Rachel O’Connor-Gosling-Andy Weir-Aditya Sood production were:

  • United Kingdom grossed $2.3M, down -30%. The cume is $40.3M.
  • China grossed $2.2M, down just -26%. The cume is $36.7M.
  • Australia grossed $2.1M, down just -18%. The cume is $22.5M.
  • South Korea grossed $1.4M, down -41%. The cume is $17.2M.
  • Germany grossed $1.4M, down -34%. The cume is $18.0M.
  • Mexico grossed $900K, down -42%. The cume is $14.1M.
  • Brazil grossed $790K on, down -36%. The cume is $7.8M.
  • Spain grossed $745K on, down -39%. The cume is $8.9M.
  • France grossed $665K, down -34%. The cume is $9.7M.
  • India grossed $552K on, down -56%. The cume is $8.1M.
  • Netherlands grossed $395K, down just -27%. The cume is $4.8M.
  • Japan grossed $365K down -32%. The cume is $9.0M.
  • Italy grossed $342K on, down -31%. The cume is $5.5M.
  • Taiwan grossed $342K on, down just -20%. The cume is $4.4M.
  • United Arab Emirates grossed $322K, down -35%. The cume is $4.1M.
  • New Zealand grossed $300K on, down just -7%. The cume is $2.9M.

The Ryan Gosling movie returned to Imax with $5.7M around the world taking its cume to $90M. Fifteen locations played in 70MM with those sites not at a sub cume of $6.3M.

New Line/Blumhouse/Atomic Monster’s Lee Cronin’s The Mummy with a $22M net production is bound to be profitable after a $34M global start with $20.5M abroad in 77 markets/14K screens and $13.5M stateside. It was built to work abroad. It’s gotta be the brand name because total awareness on tracking was quite strong in the states. The offshore opening is in line with Scream VI, Evil Dead Rise, Halloween Ends, Terrifier 3, Saw X, and The Curse of La Llorona. Like for likes have the Cronin directed and written movie -12% behind Smile 2 and -9% behind Evil Dead Rise.

What’s interesting here is that some of the territory openings for Mummy are bigger than Blumhouse’s Wolf Man in reported, i.e. leading market Mexico with $2.2M (higher than Wolf Man‘s entire $1.7M reported cume and not far from 28 Years Later‘s $2.7M opening), UK’s $1.4M (literally what Wolf Man ended its run at), Spain with $1.1M (again, defeats Wolf Man‘s $890K cume, and just a smidge under the $1.2M of 28 Years Later), France $1M (just $100K from taking over the entire $1.1M cume of Wolf Man), Indonesia $993K (blows away Wolf Man‘s final cume of $251K), Germany $928K (not far from 28 Years Later‘s $1.3M reported start and slaying Ready or Not 2‘s $389K opening), Italy with $877K (scares away Ready or Not 2‘s $328K debut), India with $855K (very big next to the under $100K final cumes of Ready or Not 2 and Wolf Man), Malaysia at $835K (higher than the final reported $707K of Smile 2), Brazil with $771K (beats the last reported $450K cume of Ready or Not 2), Australia at $683K (+79% over Ready or Not 2 start), and Colombia with $674K (+122% over the reported start of 28 Years Later).

The global Imax network of 690 screens minted $2M alone for the Cronin pic.

Disney/Pixar’s Hoppers counted $7.9M WW ($2.9M Domestic, $5M from 52 foreign markets). It’s still the top non-local movie in Japan with a running cume north of $14M. Following on from its sixth weekend, Hoppers dropped by -38% overall. Strongest holds were experienced in New Zealand (+12%), Australia (+4%, $6.1M cume), France (-11%, $11.5M cume), China (-17%, pic’s biggest terrotory with $23.6M), Japan (-32%), Taiwan (-33%, $8.1M cume), Germany (-43%, 3rd best offshore cume with $15.7M) and Spain (-43%, $8.9M cume).

In local fare, Sony Pictures International Productions’ YA pic Boulevard expanded to three markets in Latin America to drive the weekend gross to $1.8M and the running cume to $2.5M. Mexico’s bow was $1M, followed by Peru with $440K and Ecuador with $160K. In Spain, the film added $215K in its second weekend, lifting the local cume to $845K. Directed by Sonia Méndez, Boulevard follows two high school outcasts who find unexpected connection despite their personal demons. As Halsey battles addiction and Luke confronts his own darkness, their growing feelings force them to question if love is worth the risk.
