'Outer Banks' Gets Season 5 Release Date, Storyline & Fir...

Oh no, not The Twinkie! The first official trailer for the upcoming fifth and final season of Netflix‘s hit action adventure series Outer Banks shows John B. (Chase Stokes) watching in horror as Cleo (Carlacia Grant) blows up his beloved van. The teaser also reveals that the new season will debut August 20, almost two years after the October 2024 premiere of Season 4.

It will not be a prolonged goodbye as the entire 10-episode Season 5 will be released as a binge drop after the series’ fourth installment was split into two batches that premiered four weeks apart. Netflix has been pulling away from the split-season model with Bridgerton as the only current scripted series that still employs it.

Netflix also has revealed the official synopsis for Season 5. It finds the Pogues at their absolute breaking point following the tragic loss of JJ in Morocco. Stranded far from home and mourning the heart of their crew, they’ve lost the Blue Crown and continue to face a gauntlet of familiar threats. With Chandler Groff (J. Anthony Crane) still at large, Dalia and the Corsairs closing in, and the Kooks ensuring the Pogues have no home to return to, John B, Sarah (Madelyn Cline), Kiara (Madison Bailey), Pope (Jonathan Daviss), and Cleo must rely on their scrappy instincts — and an uneasy alliance with Rafe (Drew Starkey) — to keep from falling apart for good. Their mission is now a desperate race to reclaim their future and finally win the freedom they’ve been chasing since the beginning. It’s the Pogues against the world as they seek to avenge their best friend and bring it on home…one final time.

Watch on Deadline

“Revenge,” JJ’s devastated girlfriend Kiara said in the final seconds of the Season 4 finale as she and the rest of the Pogues (plus Rafe) vowed to go after JJ’s killer, his biological father Chandler Groff who was headed to Portugal.

The trailer, which you can watch above, provides a glimpse of what happens after. The Pogues are seen confronting Chandler and paying tribute to their fallen friend as the video showcases more of the sweeping action the show has become known for with the tagline “One Last Ride.”

The teaser is different from the one played at the Netflix upfront presentation in May. As Deadline reported at the time, it featured the Pogues in custody and attending a hearing in what appears to be Croatia, judging by the flag and police uniforms shown. (Season 5 filmed some scenes in Dubrovnik, Croatia.) The Pogues are ultimately extradited and separated — reverting to the setup of Season 2 — with John B, Sarah, Kiara and Pope sent to OBX and Cleo to the Bahamas. John B and the gang did not get a warm welcome on Kildare Island, with Pope given an arraignment notice upon arrival after cutting the ankle monitor he had on following a felony charge for attacking a cop to save JJ.

First-look photos released today, which you can see in chronological order below, help piece together a timeline for Season 5. The gang, including Rafe, are seen in European setting in photos from Episode 502, surrendering and behind bars (in the same, likely Croatian, jail as in the upfront teaser) in Episode 503 before returning to the Outer Banks in the same episode, with more adventures and The Twinkie explosion in Episodes 505-508.

Also unveiled today is the Key Art for Outer Banks Season 5 featuring the surviving Pogues, John B, Sarah, Kiara, Pope and Cleo, and the show’s signature slogan “Pogues For Life.”

In addition to Stokes, Cline, Bailey, Daviss, Grant, Starkey and Crane, the main Season 5 cast includes Austin North as Topper, Fiona Palomo as Sofia and Cullen Moss as Shoupe.

Heading into the final season, Outer Banks creators, writers and executive producers Jonas Pate, Josh Pate and Shannon Burke told Deadline that “when we get to the end, I think everyone’s going to be satisfied that we bring everything home and all the stories are wrapped up.”

Over its four seasons to date, the series has been a ratings powerhouse, appearing 25 times on the Netflix Top 10 English TV list. It also has expanded into Poguelandia, a popular live fan event.
