Nearly two years to the day after the Tony-winning Kimberly Akimbo closed on Broadway – and just ahead of the production’s final stop on a national tour – the musical has recouped its investments, producers announced today.

With a Broadway capitalization of $7 million, Kimberly Akimbo began previews at the Booth Theatre on October 12, 2022, with an official opening on November 10, 2022. The comedy-drama closed April 28, 2024, after 32 previews, 612 performances, eight Tony Award nominations and five Tony wins (including Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical for David Lindsay-Abaire, Best Original Score for Jeanine Tesori and Lindsay-Abaire, Best Actress in a Musical for Victoria Clark, and Best Featured Actress in a Musical for Bonnie Milligan).

The subsequent national tour played 79 weeks across 61 cities, and will make its final stop in New Haven, Connecticut, at the Shubert Theatre May 14–17.

According to producers, both the Broadway production and the national tour have now recouped their investments , with the success of the tour allowing the Broadway production to return the remainder of its capitalization.

The tour stars Ann Morrison in the title role alongside Marcus Phillips, Jim Hogan, Emily Koch, Laura Woyasz, Gabby Beredo, Skye Alyssa Friedman, Darron Hayes and Max Santopietro.

The synopsis: Kimberly is about to turn 16 and recently moved with her family to a new town in suburban New Jersey, where she is forced to navigate family dysfunction, a rare genetic condition, her first crush…and possible felony charges. Ever the optimist, she is determined to find happiness against all odds and embark on a great adventure.

The national tour is produced by David Stone, The Atlantic Theater Company, James L. Nederlander, LaChanze, John Gore, Patrick Catullo, and Aaron Glick.
