Peter Sutherland is embarking on his final mission. The upcoming fourth season of Netflix‘s The Night Agent, which began production today in Los Angeles, will be the series’ last.
Talk about the series possibly ending with Season 4 started circulating over the past few weeks. After a hot start — The Night Agent‘s first season broke into Netflix’s Most Popular English series list and stayed there for three years — viewership has slipped in Season 2 and 3.
According to sources, Netflix data showed that there was still solid interest among fans in getting another chapter of Peter’s (Gabriel Basso) heroics as a Night Agent, which led to the series landing a Season 4 renewal. Additionally, Season 3 was well liked creatively by Netflix executives, some considering it the best in the series so far.
In anticipation of a Season 4 pickup, producing studio Sony Pictures Television had secured a $31.6M California tax credit to relocate the show from New York, where Seasons 2 and 3 were filmed, to Los Angeles. To get the credit, filming of the fourth season had to start by May.

With the decision made early, The Night Agent fans will get a proper ending as Season 4 has been conceived with the possibility of it being a final installment in mind.
“Ever since the initial success of The Night Agent, I’ve been obsessed with eventually delivering a proper and thrilling conclusion to the show and to Peter Sutherland’s journey,” creator, EP and showrunner Shawn Ryan said. “I’m so grateful to Netflix and Sony Pictures Television for partnering with me on The Night Agent and for giving us the space to deliver a definitive final season to our worldwide legion of fans. We are hard at work to complete our story and to make our final season one our fans will never forget.”

As Deadline reported exclusively last month, The Night Agent has lined up more big-name series regular cast additions opposite Basso for its fourth and final season. They include Bosch star Titus Welliver as a special DOJ prosecutor, Trevante Rhodes (Moonlight) as Peter’s new partner Dom, Li Jun Li (Sinners) as Dom’s wife and Elizabeth Lail (You) as Peter’s ex-fiancée Zoe.
In Season 3, Night Agent Peter Sutherland (Basso) was called in to track down a young Treasury Agent who fled to Istanbul with sensitive government intel after killing his boss. This kicked off a sequence of events where Peter investigated a dark money network while avoiding its paid assassins.
Season 3 was executive produced by Ryan and Marney Hochman with MiddKid Productions, Seth Gordon and Julia Gunn with Exhibit A; James Vanderbilt, William Sherak, Paul Neinstein and Nicole Tossou with Project X; David Beaubaire with Sunset Lane Media, Munis Rashid, Paul Bernard, Guy Ferland, and Seth Fisher.
