‘The Last Thing He Told Me’ Star Jennifer Garner On Season 2 Finale’s Cliffhanger & Season 3 Hopes: “Just When Hannah Starts To Relax…”
2026-04-10 · via Deadline

SPOILER ALERT: This post contains spoilers for The Last Thing He Told Me‘s Season 2 finale.

Like Judy Greer’s Quinn Campano says in the final moments of The Last Thing He Told Me Season 2’s finale, there may be some “loose threads to tie up” following the sophomore season of Hello Sunshine and Apple TV’s drama series, based on Laura Dave’s book of the same name and its sequel, The First Time I Saw Him.

Season 2’s closing episode ends with Quinn officially taking the reins of her father Frank’s (John Noble) shady business dealing in organized crime. She sits down and smells a cigar her dead father left behind at his desk and then dials the mysterious “Cleaners” which ends up being Maris (Michael Hyatt) at the U.S. Marshall’s office. Maris is the mole who works for the Campanos, and Quinn hints to her that their work with Hannah Hall (Jennifer Garner), Owen Michaels (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) and Bailey (Angourie Rice) may not be over. Cue Olivia Rodrigo’s “obsessed.”

“That was a real surprise. We didn’t know if they would end up leaving [that scene] in, and I love that Apple is leaving it in because it feels like a potential nod to a third season, which would absolutely thrill me,” star and executive producer Jennifer Garner told Deadline of that cliffhanger ending scene. “Especially if it means that I get to go head-to-head with Judy even more. But yeah, just when Hannah starts to relax, someone behind the scenes is ginning things up to make her very uncomfortable in the future, and that’s what that scene tells us.”

With a precedent of Season 1’s finale ending making way for Season 2 and a whole new sequel novel from The Last Thing He Told Me author Laura Dave, a third season wouldn’t be entirely out of consideration. Nearly three years after the premiere of Season 1, Season 2 of the twisting mystery show expanded the world Dave originally sketched out in her novel, which was then adapted by her husband Josh Singer into the television series.

“We would all love nothing more than to tie up those loose ends in a season three. There is a fabulous Judy Greer cliffhanger that is a great springboard into whatever would be the next chapter of this story with Hannah Hall,” Lauren Neustadter, President of Film and TV at Hello Sunshine and executive producer on the series, told Deadline. “Fingers crossed. It would be the greatest dream to get to bring this band back together again. I love being a part of the world of the show. So we would all very much love for this story to continue.”

Whether that means another novel from Laura Dave, Neustadter encouraged Deadline to ask the author herself, who also has an adaptation of her book, The Night We Lost Him, in development as a feature film with her husband at Netflix. The 2024 novel from Dave features a different cast of characters, but is also set on the southern coast of California.

Greer, who spoke with Deadline in a separate interview about her character’s arc in Season 2, is also game to come back in a JG (Jennfier Garner) vs. JG (Judy Greer) showdown for a third season.

“One hundred [percent] emphatically, yes, yeah. I would love to see what’s next, for Quinn, especially, and I would love to play it,” she said. “It was — I don’t want to say once in a lifetime. It’s been very few offers I’ve gotten that have really been flattering to me, and also, knowing that my boss, Jennifer Garner, on the show, one of my bosses, was very instrumental in telling these people, ‘She can do this, you guys should think about it. She’d be great.'”

All episodes of The Last Thing He Told Me Season 2 are now streaming on Apple TV.
