After the game, a group of players laughed when President Donald Trump, on speaker during a celebratory phone call, joked that he’d also have to invite the women’s hockey team to the State of the Union address—or risk impeachment. After initially appearing to downplay the ensuing controversy—“People are so negative about things,” Hughes said—he emphasized his support for the fellow gold-medal winners. “We have so much respect for the women’s team,” Hughes said. “They have so much respect for us. We’re all just proud Americans. We’re happy that we both swept the Olympics.”
