US artificial intelligence company OpenAI reportedly said on Saturday that it had concluded a partnership with the Maltese government, marking a significant move to give all residents access to its ChatGPT Plus service for one year.

The primary motive behind this initiative is to encourage residents to sign up for an AI literacy course. 

According to Reuters, the programme will launch in May and is expected to gain momentum as more Maltese residents will complete the free course.

Meanwhile, citizens residing in Malta will have access to it as well.

OpenAI said in a statement: “ We are turning an unfamiliar concept into practical assistance for our families, students, and workers.”

It is pertinent to note that Malta is the first country to launch such a programme. The coming time will tell the true success of the newly launched initiative. At present, the company has not revealed the financial details of the deal.

Nonetheless, the success of the deal will depend on how effectively Maltese residents learn to use AI during their year of free ChatGPT Plus access as per the current agreement deal.
