Iran conflict sparks rising diesel costs, straining US sc...

The cost of diesel prices have further strained US school district budgets, which were already tightened by the conflict in Iran. These crucial cost increases have made it much more expensive to bus students and run backup generators- a financial shock that officials warn is affordable over the long term.

Given the current situation, school districts from Yakima, Washington to Waco are liquidating emergency funding reserves to keep buses running. The soaring prices have left adverse effects on economies around the globe.

Recent situations have caused problems in the US to become a political liability for President Trump ahead of November midterm elections. US school bus operators are primarily major buyers of diesel, consuming more than 800 million gallons of diesel annually.

In this connection, James Rowan, executive director of the Association of School Business Officials said: “ Districts can plan for higher costs, but rapid swings in prices make it very difficult to budget accurately.”

According to Reuters, school officials are eagerly working to save money by changing fuel purchasing practices and also mitigating administrative spending.

Mills expressed his view that “ if the prices continue to increase we could be in a position of reducing support services to students.”

The district further clarified that the Waco Independent School District has more than 80 buses covering round-trip routes of about 60 miles per day. The data suggests that the district experienced an 84% annual rise in the price paid for diesel in April.

In line with the current situation, the Los Angeles Unified School District has reportedly been shifting from diesel-powered buses for years. A district spokesperson said its “roughly 1,300-bus fleet runs on alternative fuels or batteries.”

“Rising diesel prices continue to impact Los Angeles Unified’s transportation budget; the district has taken proactive steps to reduce reliance on fossil fuels through significant investments in clean transportation.”
