Aviation startup Merlin Labs recently demonstrated its AI-powered flight system aboard a Cessna Caravan aircraft, where the technology handled major piloting tasks including navigation, radio communication and landing assistance.

The Merlin Pilot system uses artificial intelligence and natural language processing to respond to air traffic control instructions and manage the aircraft during flight. Test pilot Matt Diamond told CNN the technology is designed to support pilots rather than replace them.

“Our experience shows this can be a very promising way to enhance safety,” Stanford University researcher Mykel Kochenderfer told CNN.

“But the industry has a long way to go to further harden the technology and establish the trust required for acceptance.”

The aviation industry is facing increasing pressure as airlines worldwide struggle with pilot shortages.

Boeing estimates more than 600,000 new pilots will be needed over the next 20 years.

US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said AI tools could help modernise aviation systems while keeping humans in control.

“We are never going to outsource the national airspace to AI tools,” Duffy told CNN, adding that : “Controllers are going to control the airspace, but we can make their jobs easier.”

Merlin Labs has completed hundreds of test flights and recently secured a contract with the US Air Force worth more than $100m.
