Steve Clarke has resigned as Scotland’s head coach, with the decision announced within minutes of confirmation the country had been eliminated from the World Cup. Clarke, who had been in post since 2019, signed a four-year contract extension shortly before the tournament.

Ian Maxwell, the Scottish Football Association chief executive, said: “We thank Steve for his record-breaking contribution and know that when the disappointment of World Cup elimination subsides, the Scotland supporters will be thankful for the memories of marching with pride at major tournaments once again.”

Scotland gained three points at the World Cup, courtesy of a 1-0 win over Haiti. Defeats by Morocco and Brazil followed to leave them third in the group, with their involvement ending once sufficient third-placed teams in other groups had bettered their record.

Clarke also guided Scotland to European Championship in 2021 and 2024, going out at the group stage on both occasions. Before he took over, Scotland’s last appearance at a major championship had been the 1998 World Cup.

“The most emotional part of this goodbye is for my players, without whom we wouldn’t have had any of the memories that we’ve accumulated from 2019 until now,” Clarke said in an open letter. “They deserve all the praise and adulation that they receive and it was truly an honour to be called their Gaffer. Thanks for having me and good luck to my successor.”

Whoever takes the job could well have a home Euros in 2028, with two places reserved for the four home nations should they fail to make it through qualifying.
