This offbeat sitcom from Northern Ireland, which started life as a BBC comedy short, is now in its second hilarious series – and it guest stars Steve Coogan. As we rejoin the boys of Ballymacnoose for an opening quadruple bill, Callum (Ryan Dylan) has a job as an actor at the folk museum, with an eccentric boss (Coogan). When the gang watch his performance as a peasant, they learn about the famine, and it sends each of them spiralling in different ways. Hollie Richardson

Isle of Wight Festival 2026

Lewis Capaldi is the first headliner of the festival, which is covered throughout the weekend. His set airs at 11pm, but also taking to the stages on Friday are Wet Leg, Two Door Cinema Club, Alessi Rose and Ash. And, if it rains, anyone experiencing fomo will feel extra smug on the sofa. HR

8pm, BBC Two
A special episode from the Gardeners’ World Live show in Birmingham. Monty Don and co roam the arena seeking inspiration, in a year when sustainability is the watchword and cork is the material of the moment. The centrepiece? A conceptual garden telling the story of evolution, co-designed by Prof Alice Roberts. Jack Seale

The famous person version of the venerable watching-folks-watch-telly show continues. Older viewers might not recognise some of the new faces, who include stars of reality TV, YouTube and Gladiators; but they can’t moan too much since there’s also Julian Clary and Nigel Havers. JS

If you’ve blazed through The Pitt and are looking for a new hospital drama to fill the gap, probably give this lighthearted affair a swerve. However, on its own terms, it’s fine – full of snark, barely interrupted by medical trauma. This week, a baby arrives in reception to the delight of everyone except grumpy Serena. Phil Harrison

Film choice

New Life (John Rosman, 2023), 11.30pm, Film4

It’s a chase thriller that largely shuns thrills, but John Rosman’s genre-fluid film is after a different kind of visceral connection. A bloodied young woman, Jessica (Hayley Erin), is on the run – for horrific reasons that only gradually become apparent. She is pursued by Sonya Walger’s weary tracker-for-hire Elsa, who is struggling to accept her motor neuron disease diagnosis. It’s not clear where our sympathies should lie, while the lives of the people Jessica briefly encounters are worthy of dramas themselves. A film about human contact, in both the emotional and medical senses. Simon Wardell
