European football: Harry Kane hits hat-trick as Bayern Mu...

Harry Kane cut through the smoke of the DFB-Pokal cup final with a hat-trick for Bayern Munich to beat defending champions Stuttgart 3-0 and complete another domestic double on Saturday.

Kane’s goals in the second half set off fireworks among the Bayern fans who had joined their Stuttgart rivals in protesting against the German soccer federation (DFB) for a planned increase in security measures.

The protests started after the half-time break when the Bayern fans displayed a giant DFB logo with a line drawn through it over a banner with an expletive against the DFB, while their Stuttgart counterparts had a banner calling for “freedom for the terraces.” They both then filled the ends of the stadium with huge pyrotechnic displays, shrouding the field under a cover of smoke.

Kane broke the deadlock shortly afterward with a diving header to Michael Olise’s cross in the 55th minute. That prompted more fireworks from the Bayern fans, worsening the already poor visibility and leading to a break in play.

Kane struck the crossbar with a thunderous shot before sealing the result in the 80th with a shot inside the bottom corner after being picked out by Luis Díaz.

Angelo Stiller conceded a penalty for hand ball and Kane completed his hat-trick from the spot in stoppage time. Kane finished with 61 goals in all competitions for Bayern this season.

Italian double winners Inter finished a triumphant Serie A season by coming back from two goals down to secure an entertaining 3-3 draw at Bologna. A 10th match without defeat left Inter 14 points clear at the top of the division, with second-placed Napoli hosting Udinese on Sunday.

Andy Diouf was Inter’s saviour in the 87th minute when he smashed home his first league goal for the club. The former France under-21 international had been key to Pio Esposito pulling Inter back into the game when he wriggled between two defenders and hit the post in the 64th minute.

Esposito tapped in on the rebound to halve the deficit for Inter, who had been trailing by two just after half-time after Federico Bernardeschi, Tommaso Pobega and a Piotr Zielinski own goal cancelled out Federico Dimarco’s brilliant free-kick. Bologna finish the season in eighth and outside the European qualification spots.

In Spain, Girona were relegated from La Liga on Saturday after a 1-1 home draw with Elche consigned them to the second division, two years after their historic third-place finish secured Champions League football.

Needing victory to stay up, Girona fell behind in the first half and although they levelled after the break could not find a winner at a tense Montilivi. The result left them in the bottom three at the final whistle, joining bottom side Real Oviedo in going down.

Mallorca beat visitors Oviedo 3-0 but finished on 42 points alongside Osasuna and Levante and were relegated after losing the head-to-head tiebreaker between the three clubs.

Champions Barcelona, who wrapped up the title two weeks ago ahead of second-placed Real Madrid, ended their campaign with a 3-1 defeat at Valencia. Robert Lewandowski scored for the champions in his final match for the club, but goals from Javi Guerra, Luis Rioja and Guido Rodríguez snatched victory for Valencia.

Real Madrid beat Athletic Bilbao 4-2 at the Santiago Bernabéu in Dani Carvajal’s farewell appearance. Carvajal set up Gonzalo García to fire Real ahead. Jude Bellingham scored a superb second, before Gorka Guruzeta slammed past Thibaut Courtois just before the break.

La Liga’s top goalscorer Kylian Mbappé swept home from outside the area for Madrid’s third, his 25th goal of the season in the top flight.

When Carvajal was taken off with 10 minutes to go, both teams gave the 34-year-old a guard of honour as he bid an emotional goodbye to the club. Brahim Díaz tucked home a fourth late on as Madrid were at least able to sign off from a disappointing trophyless campaign on a high note, despite Urko Izeta pulling another back for Athletic.

Celta Vigo secured sixth place and a Europa League spot with a 1-0 win over Sevilla, while Getafe beat Osasuna 1-0 to finish seventh and claim Conference League qualification.

Meanwhile, the renewables tycoon Enrique Riquelme confirmed he would be running for the presidency of Real Madrid, presenting the first challenge in more than two decades to Florentino Pérez’s hold on the world’s richest club.

Riquelme went in person to present his papers at the club’s facilities in Valdebebas, northeast of Madrid city centre, on Saturday. Real’s electoral commission will examine his documentation on Sunday and, if it is deemed valid, officially confirm his candidacy and schedule the election, expected to take place on 7 June.
