Olivia Rodrigo brings the cure with new album

Released on June 12, Olivia Rodrigo dropped her long-awaited third studio album titled “you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love.” The album has 13 tracks and features an image of her on a swing kicking her feet up toward the sky, which is aesthetically different from her previous covers.

Rodrigo is stepping out of her comfort zone with the album’s imagery and her overall theme that she has carried for years. She seemed focused on sticking with four-letter album titles, making the lengthy title a surprise to listeners.

Rodrigo is also ditching her iconic purple color scheme and embracing a completely different vibe compared to “SOUR” and “GUTS.” Purple became closely tied to her, but it is time for a change.

The singles “drop dead” and “the cure” are already summer hits that are upbeat but still get the message across through the lyrics. This line from “drop dead” captures the curiosity that comes with finding someone interesting and is the most playful song lyric-wise.

“Oh, one night I was bored in bed and stalked you on the internet,” Rodrigo sings.

“the cure” takes a different turn. Although upbeat, the lyrics take the listener straight back to the cold hard truth. This shows the reality of how a person may just not be the one and they unfortunately cannot fix every problem within the relationship.

“But it don’t matter how your love feels anymore,” Rodrigo sings. “It’ll never be the cure.”

“expectations” has to be the most fun listening experience, coming directly after one of the saddest songs, “less.” This switch was definitely an emotional shift while trying to process the profound jump.

The track “begged” expresses the honest truth of what many girls feel and quite literally beg for in a relationship. This is such a simple line that perfectly sums up exactly what she was feeling at that point.

“All that I want is to know undoubtedly that you just have eyes for me,” Rodrigo sings.

“cigarette smoke” feels like a relationship was all just an act and not what the couple truly wanted. The worst feeling is realizing one person saw the relationship as perfect while the other was not fully invested.

“I thought that we played the perfect couple,” Rodrigo sings. “Until you didn’t want the part.”

Another eye-catching moment was her collaboration with Robert Smith on the track “what’s wrong with me.” This unexpected feature is a nice touch to the album.

The album goes through the ups and downs of being a 23-year-old experiencing emotional challenges in love. This feels like Rodrigo’s most personal project yet, showing her growth both emotionally and artistically.

Together, these songs showcase the highs and lows that define the album. Going through the exciting thrills of love, but at the end of the day sometimes the thoughts take control and win. There is a variety of high-energy songs and slow-paced songs, the perfect mix and what one would expect from Rodrigo.

Rodrigo will kick off The Unraveled Tour in September and it will be exciting to see where she goes with her creativity in the setlist along with the visuals for the show.
