AI shrinking the margin for nuclear error in South Asia

The recent US-Israel-Iran conflict has confirmed a structural shift in warfare: artificial intelligence is no longer just enhancing military operations — it is compressing the time available to prevent escalation.

In this conflict, AI-enabled decision-support systems processed vast streams of satellite imagery, drone feeds and signals intelligence to assist in strike planning.

Thousands of targets were identified and struck within days — a pace that in earlier campaigns would have taken months. Recent defense analyses have highlighted the growing role of AI-enabled systems in compressing operational timelines and accelerating targeting cycles.

What matters is not only the scale of operations but the speed at which decisions are made. In a nuclear weaponized environment like South Asia, that speed is not an advantage alone — it is a risk multiplier.

The debate around military AI often centers on autonomy — the fear that machines will eventually make life-and-death decisions independently. But this framing misses the more immediate transformation already underway.

AI is reshaping warfare upstream. It filters information, identifies patterns, prioritizes targets and generates recommendations before human decisions are made.

In doing so, it creates what can be described as algorithmic confidence — the belief that more data, processed faster, produces more reliable outcomes. That belief, however, is misplaced.

AI does not eliminate uncertainty; it reorganizes it. Errors remain embedded in data, models and interpretation. But as operational tempo increases, the opportunity to detect and correct those errors diminishes. In high-intensity environments, speed begins to displace deliberation.

India-Pakistan as preview of AI-era crises

The May 2025 standoff between India and Pakistan offers a clear glimpse of how these dynamics could unfold in future crises.

The Pahalgam attack caused tensions to escalate into a full multidomain conflict that included airstrikes, missile exchanges, drone operations and cyber warfare.

Both sides operated under conditions that enabled the use of advanced digital technologies for surveillance and targeting, making near-instant decision-making possible.

Indian officials later acknowledged the use of a data-driven targeting system during Operation Sindoor, which achieved approximately 94% accuracy.

The system integrated real-time data from drones, radars and satellites with 20 years of collected intelligence, including signal patterns, movement histories and equipment profiles.

The significance lies not in the precision claimed but in the process. AI did not simply improve targeting; it shortened the interval between detection and action, reducing the space for political calibration.

Pakistan, for its part, is moving in a similar direction. The Pakistan Air Force has established a Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Computing, and exercises such as Gold Eagle 2026 reflect a growing focus on integrating data-driven, networked capabilities into operations.

The combined civil and military response during the 2025 crisis demonstrated Pakistan’s commitment to a unified operational approach.

Decision-making remained controlled because officials chose to defend their territory and population without broadening the conflict, which helped contain escalation.

These trends point not to divergence but to convergence. Both states are building systems designed to accelerate decision-making in a crisis environment already defined by compressed timelines, political pressure and deep mistrust.

India’s modernization draws on its growing strategic partnership with the United States, while Pakistan’s trajectory reflects deepening technological ties with China. The result adds another layer of complexity to an already fragile deterrence architecture.

The risks emerging from this convergence are significant, even when not immediately visible.

The first lies in scale. Even highly accurate systems leave room for error. At a reported 94% accuracy, a small share of targets may still be misidentified.

In a high-tempo conflict involving hundreds of strikes, that margin becomes strategically significant, particularly in regions dense with dual-use infrastructure, where a single mistake can trigger escalation.

A second risk is automation bias. Under stress, operators begin to treat system outputs as reliable, treating verification steps as a procedural formality rather than genuine scrutiny.

This is compounded by cognitive offloading. As reliance on AI grows, decision-makers may lose the habit of critical assessment and stop questioning outputs when it matters most.

Opacity further limits accountability. Many systems operate as “black boxes”, making it difficult to understand how conclusions are reached — complicating both internal decision-making and external communication in a crisis.

These dynamics create a paradox: systems designed to improve clarity may instead deepen strategic ambiguity.

Nuclear escalation problem

In most regions, these risks are serious. In South Asia, they are existential.

India and Pakistan operate under a nuclear overhang in which even limited conventional exchanges carry escalation risks. Their crises are shaped not only by military calculations but also by domestic political pressures, media narratives and deep-seated mistrust.

The 2025 standoff showed how quickly tensions can intensify. Within days, both sides moved from signaling to kinetic action across multiple domains. Escalation remained controlled, but largely due to restraint, backchannel communication and external mediation.

These emerging technologies risk eroding that balance. By accelerating targeting and compressing decision timelines, they reduce the space for leaders to pause, reassess and de-escalate, pushing crises toward high-speed feedback loops.

This becomes particularly dangerous in the context of dual-capable systems. Missiles, radar installations and command nodes often serve both conventional and strategic functions.

Misidentification, whether due to flawed data or misinterpretation, could be perceived as an attempt to degrade nuclear capabilities. In such conditions, intent becomes secondary and perception drives response.

Military thinking has long relied on the Observe-Orient-Decide-Act (OODA) loop to describe decision-making in conflict. AI is now compressing this cycle.

Observation and orientation are increasingly automated, while decision windows narrow. In theory, this offers speed. In practice, it risks producing action without sufficient understanding.

In a networked battlespace where satellites, drones, air defense systems and electronic warfare platforms are interconnected, a single false signal can propagate across domains. A tactical misreading can quickly acquire strategic significance.

Escalation, in such a system, may not be the result of deliberate choice. It may emerge from the interaction of systems operating faster than human judgment can follow.

The challenge for India and Pakistan is not to halt technological progress. It is to ensure that speed does not outpace control. Three priorities stand out.

First, stronger data governance. These systems inherit the weaknesses of their data, making continuous auditing, validation and updating of intelligence inputs critical to prevent past errors from shaping real-time decisions.

Second, meaningful human oversight. Decision-making should involve careful, multi-source verification, especially for sensitive targets with civilian or dual-use implications.

Third, focused confidence-building measures. Even in a low-trust environment, tools such as enhanced military hotlines, rapid clarification mechanisms and shared understandings around high-risk targets can help slow escalation at critical moments.

The illusion of certainty

The central danger is not that machines will replace humans but that they may create a false sense of certainty. In a region like South Asia, where crises unfold quickly and the stakes are existential, that illusion carries serious risks.

These technologies do not simply make war faster. They narrow the space for doubt, hesitation and restraint — the very factors that have thus far prevented catastrophe between India and Pakistan.

If this shift goes unrecognized, the most destabilizing feature of military AI will not be autonomy on the battlefield. It will be confidence before the strike, in a nuclear region where mistakes are not easily reversed.
