The US military is preparing to withdraw part of its tanker aircraft stationed at Ben Gurion Airport, which currently make up around 20% of all aircraft deployed in Israel, News.Az reports, citing Israel National News.
The move comes following an agreement between Washington and Tehran, which included a memorandum of understanding aimed at paving the way toward a permanent end to the war.
In recent months, dozens of US tanker aircraft had been positioned across large sections of both Ben Gurion Airport and Ramon Airport. Their presence has drawn criticism from Israeli aviation officials.
The head of Israel’s Civil Aviation Authority, Shmuel Zakai, previously warned that “Ben Gurion is operating in practice as a military base and not as a civilian airport.”
Withdrawing some of the aircraft could somewhat relieve the current parking shortage at the airport.
At this stage most of the US tanker fleet is expected to remain in Israel. As a result, the likely impact of the planned move on Ben Gurion's operations is expected to be relatively limited.
