Apple’s next major iPhone software update will enable users to build digital gift cards and tickets, Bloomberg reported Monday (May 4), citing unnamed sources.

The new “Create a Pass” feature in the Wallet app is designed for situations in which a business provides a QR code for entry but doesn’t support Apple’s Wallet app, according to the report.

It enables users to generate a custom pass around the QR code by importing the code into the app, per the report.

The feature will have templates for standard, membership and event passes, and it will let users customize the information shown on each pass, the report said.

Apple did not immediately reply to PYMNTS’ request for comment.

According to the report, Create a Pass is set to be unveiled in June at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) and then released with iOS 27 in the fall.

When announcing WWDC in March, the company said the event will feature updates for Apple platforms, including new software and developer tools and artificial intelligence advancements.

It was reported in March that Apple also plans to unveil a new version of its Siri voice assistant at the event. The new Siri will be more like an AI agent and will interact in a conversational way through both text and voice.

The PYMNTS Intelligence report “Apple Pay @11: Usage is Up, but Competitors are Gaining Ground” found that mobile wallet usage in stores has surged, with 31% of shoppers now using them weekly compared to 14% in August 2024. Apple Pay led this growth, with 16% of consumers reporting they used the service in stores during the previous week, double the 8% share from 2024.

The report also found that among new wallet users, the most common reason for trying the technology was that it was the easiest or fastest option available. Generation Z consumers proved especially motivated by speed and ease.

Apple reported in October that Wallet now provides hundreds of millions of users around the globe with access to Apple Pay and other tools. The digital wallet can be used for transit in 250 regions and 800 cities, has been used to provision hotel room keys for 65,000 hotel rooms, and is supported by 29 car manufacturers and 300 models.
